Do you know why you were prescribed valium?  This is not an MD medication.

    Hi,

I also have been prescribed low dose diazapam (generic for valium) and felt the same way as you in the beginning.  But it is very helpful when taken 'as needed'.  I only take it when I feel vertigo or bad dizziness coming on.  It is a common treatment for MD in the US.  They believe it sedates the vestibular nerve as well as calms the stomach.  Since MD causes a lot of anxiety, it treats that as well.  I have had it for 7 years and have never developed any dependence on it.  I have found it very helpful in minimizing the attacks if taken soon enough.  It is very low dose, and again, I only take it sporadically, as needed to blunt the attacks.  BTW, the diuretic helped me.  That and a low sodium diet.  I very seldom get vertigo attacks now.

Valium can help with vertigo symptoms. Can lesson them and keep them from getting worse. I'm very surprised others that replied have not heard of Valium helping vertigo symptoms. Do research, there's plenty out there to help you. First and foremost, no salt diet. I do less than 1000mg day, it works!! As far as the Valium, I only take it when I feel attack coming on. And it helped. I would ask your doc that prescribed it first. I personally would not take it daily, but please ask your doctor. Hope this helps.

I too am on a diuretic and was given valium.  But the Valium is only to be taken when I get a bad vertigo attack.  I'm surprised too that you have gotten some of the comments below.  Valium will calm you and tell your nerves to relax which will help with the vertigo panic.  Taking the diuretic is helping me with my MD and hope it helps with yours too.  Are you located in the US?  That is where I am.  Hang in there.

Im having counciling to help reduce my anxiety but its good to know there is a medication if all else fails, you are spot on about not feeling alone with this group.

Would love to know if counciling helps.  I have anxiety big time.  Some are panic attacks like sittingin the back of a van and can't get out or when flying and I'm in the back of the plane and no one seems to be getting off fast enough.  Co-workers tease me and we all laugh but thankfully they understand.

Oh boy, you do have it bad.  I can't imagine not being able to drive.  I feel for you.  I work from home and it is always quiet but just this past week I was out of town for a work conference and there is a big difference in noise levels.  I've lost a lot of heaing in my right ear too and have lots of humming.  Try to be positive.  I've started doing yoga at home off my ipad.  There is a great Yoga app.  Their logo is white with a green and purple looking flower.  They have all sorts of 5, 15, 30 minute sessions from calming to balance and strength.  My doctor suggested yoga which I find is helping.  Ok - back to work.  Take call all!

I had a lot of anxiety when I first had attacks in feb/march 2015 especially with confined spaces eg toilets, airplane or even being in a car. Stayed at home after two trips to hospital and didn't go out. It did cure my lifetime fear of people walking in on me in the toilet as i stopped and still don't like locking the toilet door. I wanted to know someone could get to me at any time. Especially before I was diagnosed MD and didn't know what was happening. My wife and I were due to go to Bangkok for a work conference but getting on a plane was never going to happen. A workmate owes me bigtime for passing the trip onto him! Vertigo and dizziness stopped late april 2015 after I went on betahistine. Still have deafness right ear, tinnitus and aural fullness but can cope with that. In NZ we don't have to stop driving unless it can occur without warning but I didn't drive at all when the symptoms were bad. Started back at work half days when I felt I could. I found this website really helpful as it showed the range of experiences everyone has, made me appreciate my attacks were not as bad as some other people and that people can still have a life with MD. I need to reduce my betahistine medication sometime to see what happens and to see if that is what is keeping vertigo away or whether it has just gone away by itself. Although still not brave enough yet. I think counciling is a good idea. I would also recommend exercise when and if you can. I started running as it felt like such freedom and was the complete opposite of how I felt during an attack. I take my Buccastem pills with me in case of an attack.Hope the councilor works out.

My doc wanted to prescribe Valium to me also. But I am very sensitive to medications and chose not to take it. However I have heard from many people that this is a regular treatment with Meniere's disease. I'm on the diuretic and a low-salt diet. That's all that I can do for now to try and control it. It's been a couple weeks now and it seems that the diuretic is working. Just very faint spells that come and go but still not able to drive.

Good luck with your treatment and looking forward to updates on how it works for you.
