Me again....BPPV

Posted , 6 users are following.

Why am I reading on websites that BPPV only lasts 2 weeks? I beg to differ on week 7! I don't even know if I've got that now! First day was 3 Vertigo spins and Dr diagnosed BPPB but not had those spins since. When I do Brandt Daroff exercises I do feel a brief dizzyness when left ear is down, but that's is now minimal. My concern is my head wooshes (although less) and being uncomfortable walking in the street (although better than weeks 1-3). Works hard too due to the amount of movement I have to do in the office. However I'm about 85 percent better at home? Any help please I'm worried sick

Also finding symptoms are worse during period?

    Hi Julie,

Most of the sites I've visited say two months, not two weeks. The vestibular physio I saw on Wednesday said the same thing. And I beg to differ too. As far as I can remember, the last time I had it, in the early '90s, it went on for at least a year - at least 9 months of that time being after I'd had a failed Epley manoeuvre.

This time it's lasted 9 weeks and was still going strong till I had a more successful Epley two days ago. That seems to have worked very well this time, though I admit it's left me with a few new symptoms I didn't have before!

I think they say things like that on websites to reassure people. However, I think it has the opposite effect. When it hasn't worn off after a few months, people think they're going to get stuck like it for ever. I can confirm from my previous experience that it does wear off very gradually as the months go by, but if you can't get it treated successfully you might be in for the long haul.

Got to admit Lily I'm now worried about having the Epley done by ENT in April in case it makes me worse. I've read a couple of your posts. I am better than the first few weeks so maybe I am very slowly recovering naturally x

Oh... I'm sorry if I scared you Julie. Just to clarify - even if the Epley does go wrong, it won't leave you permanently worse. As I understand it, there's a small chance the dislodged crystals can go off into yet another canal where they shouldn't be. This can make you feel grim, but only for a day or two. They soon come out again - but usually back into their original wrong place so it just leaves you back to square 1. That's what seems to have happened to me the first time round.

I must admit I was very scared when I went to have it done on Wednesday. The physio very honestly admitted that this can happen, but he also said it was extremely rare. In the event, the cure was immediate this time. I skipped straight off the table afterwards, steady as a rock, and went for an hour-long walk (which is what he told me to do if possible). I started getting a new problem yesterday that I hadn't had before - things not keeping still when I look at them, which makes me feel a bit sick. However, he warned me things like that could happen in the immediate aftermath, but it wouldn't last. That seems to be true, because I'm already feeling much better this evening than I did at lunch time today.

In any case, you might find your symptoms have cleared up by the time you get your ENT appointment. Contrary to what someone else has said here, BPPV (if that's what it really is) always resolves without treatment eventually. It's just that the two-month estimate is a tad optimistic in some cases!

I'd say go for it. I certainly don't regret biting the bullet this time round. But don't drive yourself there, just in case you don't feel too good afterwards. And don't eat a big meal immediately beforehand. The manoeuvre can make you feel sick, but only for a few seconds at a time.

Yes, it's not the room that spins now (1st day it was) it's me...I feel like I sway slightly or rock.

Please let me know what you get told at ENT, I've got to wait another month x

The first time I had bppv it lasted months.. of course the symptoms gradually lessened, but It was literally months before I felt "normal" again.. hang in there.. it does get better

      Oh hell months 😩😩

It's hard to hang in there with 3 kids on your own and work. On the bright side I'm better than the first weeks so going in the right direction I suppose. Keeping my fingers crossed anyway, I wouldn't wish this on anyone 😕

Oh Hun.... bless you, thankfully you have your husband. I've been doing the Drandt Daroff exercises since day one. I think they have helped a bit but they will bring on the dizzies when you go down on the affected ear. They are designed to help your brain compensate for the mixed messages it's getting. Just do them on your bed, relax and put some music on. I've not got severe dizzyness but I know that some people don't do them as they are both time consuming and bring on Vertigo. (But I think you are like me and don't have spinning Vertigo?) when I do them I get like a haze, wobble feeling for about 6 seconds-left ear. Let me know how you get on. I walked to Morrisons this morning, only 15 minute walk but it didn't feel right at all x
