Med increase?

Going through a painful attack right now.  Had uric level done today came back 6.7.  Doc said we might increase allopurinol  depending on Uric level.  Is there room for increasing with a level of 6.7?  I'm on 300mg a day right now.

Sorry to hear you're having it bad, but it's all dependant on your diet. Avoid the purines especially those found in bread, rye or pumpernickel, salmon, herring, spinach and organ meats. Also, no cream of wheat or farina. Drink Cherry juice which helps to neutralize the blood. That's what I drink, but also celery seed I hear works miracles for gout victims. Hope this helps.

See my post lower down.  Tried all the pills, celerey seed, devil's claw, cherry capsules, but they never worked.  Eventually I had gout longer than being gout-free, over a 12 month period.  By eliminating the bad foods, taking 500mg of vitamin C/day and being meat-free Monday to Friday,  I haven't had an attack for 4 years.  I've never taken allopurinol to control it.  Gout is now a long and distant memory.

Kenny, I really like your idea of being meat free M-F.  Is the only protein you take in on weekends?

Yes, it was for about 3 years.  Perhaps there is a gradual build up of uric acid over a long time period and this got it down to low levels.  Now I'm a 5-2 er which I think helps and I seem to be able to eat a bit more meat on weekdays with no reoccurance of the gout.

    Hi

Are you also taking Colchicine and an anti-inflammatory (indometacin or etoricoxib) to help with the attack? I think the max dose of Allupurinol per day is 800mg but I can't cope with more than 100mg so take Benzbromarone as well

If I was you I would look for an alternative to Allupurinol like Sulfinpyrazone, Febuxostat or Benzbromarone. I found these to me to have less impact on your gut

If things get really bad your GP can administer a steroid injection which will clear up an attack in less than 12 hours

    Good luck

    Thanks

      Chris,

I tried Colchicine one time and it didn't work.  I have been on Allopurinol for many years now.  Was DX'd with Gout in 2002.  Went on Allopurinol shortly after.  It has worked wonderfully until the last few months.  What happened to you when you reached 100mg?  I will ask my doctor about the other meds.  Thanks

Colchicine should work, other than steroid tablets or an injection it is the only way I have found to successfully treat a gout attack, however if I take it for too long it does make me ill

As for Allopurinol anything above 100mg gave me stomach cramps and diarrhoea, so fairly unpleasant

    Hi,

I am on 300mg and I believe that a higher dose is not unusual.

Note that my understanding is that Allopurinol takes some time (several months+) to become effective.  It is a longer term fix and may no produce results in the short term.

I have taken it for about 3 years and am gout free.

      21,

Thank you for taking time to reply.

I'm sorry I should have went into more detail.  I have been on Allopurinol for about 14 years now.  Doc said yesterday morning that an increase in Allo. may be needed but I just got the results yesterday afternoon of 6.7.  Have not spoke with the Doc yet on the next step.  Just wanted to inquire to see if anyone else was on a higher dose than 300mg daily.
