They have surgested sodium valproate or topiramate! My doctor wants me to think about this as it could effect me having children and also cause kidney problems!

Dont know about sodium valproate, but the topirimate made me suicidal and this has been the case for many of its users on here. So definitley wont recommend that one.
Have you done your own research into the effects on childbirth of these meds yet? In taking any meds you have to balance what you might gain with the possible side effects, to determine whether they are worth taking.
Good luck Kirsty, Be good to hear how you get on.
Take care

Don't know about sodium valproate (you can check it out on the internet) but topiramate is the generic for Topamax, an anticonvulsant, antiepileptic drug that is also used for preventing migraines. After 14 years of migraines and 24/7 pressure headaches and every conceivable test and medication available, I am once again on Topamax. My new neurlogist told me I wouldn't know whether it would help for another two months (encouraging, isn't it?) I'm to contact him and at that time he may increase it and I wait another two months. In the meantime I "suck it up" every day and night. I take Relpax, prescribed by a neurologist in New York City (I now live out of state), but it can be taken only three times a week. The other nights when the pain won't let me sleep I take Excedrin for Migtaine. Yes, I know I probably have rebound headaches, but I also need a break from the debilitating pain. Every medication has side effects. I don't pay much attention to the accompanying info; if I did I would never pop another pill. Follow your gut and read what you can on migraines and their treatment. I had two Botox injections which were useless for me but helpful to other migraine sufferers. No two patients are the same. Keep searching, asking, looking, reading, etc. Good luck and remember, one day at a time.

I have been on sodium valproate for 6 months, I have been diagnosed by a Neurologist with Chronic Complex Basillar migraine and lose conciousness regularly. I started on a low dose and slowly was increased to 1800mg but I started losing my hair at the high dose so it has now been reduced down again to 1200mg but I found I suffered minimal side effects just some feeling of nausea for a few days when starting and upon increasing dose but this settled down. I am still losing consciousness and have therefore been prescribed Topiramate in addition to the sodium valproate but have not started these yet.
The medication has definitely improved my other symptoms.
Hope this helps.
