Really need advice re my sons medication he is in a private funded mental health rehab and been on Clopixol depot for a year and is not working according to the doctors reports, but yet she refuses to change it he is on the maximum dose of 600mg a week and instead of trying something else she has added a second anti psychotic med Olanzapine 5mg a day he went in this unit a bright intellegent young man who was having rehabilatation for binge drinking and mild drug use he is now a walking zombie sleeping 26 hour in one go and for want of a better way to explain him the lights are on but no one is home, I really do not know where to turn as the Phsyciatrist will not be moved on changing his meds, in 16 years he has only ever tryed 2 meds Olanzapine for 11 years which worked and no hospital admissions but since he was changed to Clopixol has been in hospital 4 times the present admission has been 1 year to date

hi Katylynn that must be awful to c UR son like that. U no UR son best and whilst it is great he is not binge drinking IVE been exactly how to describe I was a zombie and a danger trying to cook like the living dead drugged up to the eye balls! Keep going bk do not take no for an answer UR son is lucky he has U so many ppl R left like that. All drugs work diff for diff ppl im sure the doctor thinks it's a good choice but U r clearly telling them he is not good on it! I was stuck on the same meds for over 20 years so I get UR frustration I had tried everything with my last doctor in the end sge retired and I finally have a doctor who is willing to work with me! Do not stop I no it's stressful but keep at them, there R many drugs out there it's just finding the right one. I think to be honest sometimes it's easier to keep someone how they R becoz it can be a really difficult process changing I thought U just swap but a lot of the time U have to be reduced slowly then put on another im not sure for alcohol as with my illness but find out all U can about the drugs avaliable educate urself on the drugs their side affects etc I have found that knowledge is the best help also and I wish I'd done it sooner. Thank god I found this site. My mum is an alcoholic and was in detox and rehab but she's not on anything now. Ring the psychiatrist get an app to talk to him try to stay calm and do not let them FOb U off yes they R professionals but UR son shouodbt be like that, if U really feel they not listening ask to spk to someone above them, ask to c another. This is UR sins life and it must be killing U seeing him like this PLS personal message me if U need to anytime. Good luck im sure ul get good advice here and PLS pls pls look after urself too x

Hi Katylynn I have just sent you a private message about my son.

But I hadn't read this untill now

. My son was on Clopixol which is an old generation drug but worked for Michaels symptoms but he was as you said like a zombie sleeping all day eating like a pig, sorry to express it like this but these are the facts. In other words no quality of life. My son loves life sport, people, holidays, music, I could go on and on. But being on that drug was a waste of his life although it was keeping him well we had to do something. Michael had the Clopixol reduced which helped down to 300 mg every 2 weeks so a lot less than your son. He was better but still not really motivated and still tired and over eating a lot. Moving forward he stopped all meds felt his old self for nearly a year but unfortunately has relapsed and now back on hospital. I asked the consultant to try a different drug which they agreed to put him on respiridon depo and olanzapan which is working slowly. He has an increased appetite still but doesn't seem so tired and more with us so to speak. They have taken him off litium only Michael didnt like it. But I think they want to try aripiprosole 5 mg too.

He still seems a bit suspicious and says thing that im not sure are quite true but time will tell hiw he gets on . Its always a worry
