medication before THR

Has anyone been on aldendronate before THR? I just had a bone density test and my PCP put me on the drug. Only had one dose but I think I need to contact the Orthopedics about the use- before surgery and after. Perhaps not use the drug- just try diet.

Hello Marti. The wee small hours in hippie land and sleep evading me. I have been on alendronate for 10 + years also prescribed calcium. Was told to keep taking them pre surgery and to continue with prescription afterwards. I do have severe osteoporosis and due to the drugs not suffered any breaks.

    Hi Marti

Just make sure they know you have osteoporosis ad chck out the exercises they give you post op.

Are you alowed to do them all?

I've had 2 THR's  and had osteopinia {pre cursor to osteoporosis} First THR was fine, 2nd one when I was four weeks post op I was doing an NHS exercise....it was standing with my hands on a flat surface and abducting my leg {to the side}. Like I  say I had done that during my first THR and this was four weeks after the second one when one day it went crack!!!!!  I was take into hospital, told I had fractured my greater trochanter bone, it would heal but take a long time.  I rang my GP to check when I was due my next DEXA scan.....it was almost ayear later so she got me an earlier one.    I have osteoporosis!!!!  I'm now permanently on crutches. When I saw the consultant Inormally see he showed me the X Ray and where the fracture happened the bones seperated so far they will not knit back again so thats it as far as mobility is cncrned

I dont know where you are.....UK?  I was given a booklet with exercises in it and this was one of them and then left to it after I came out of hospital......I feel there should have been a warning against that exercise.....but whats  done is done so just be careful which ones you do......check out wih the physiotherapist.

Hello Eileen once diagnosed with osteopenia were you not given medication? I have had severe osteoporosis for past 14 years and treated with the necessary meds. Have just had THR on right and given the exercises in booklet. They are aware of my condition and have no restrictions on any of them. Are you on meds now? Am in UK and op done on NHS

      Hi Ann

My GP said that the osteopinia should be treated with "life changes" not meds.  Osteoporosis is different....I'm on meds for that but a bit late  LOL

I was on AA but it upset my stomach, she tried another one {same family} same result......I'm now on Bonviva {same family} but only take it once a month......her idea is that if its going to make me feel nauseaus its only going to be once a month not once a weekfrown

The other meds I'm on are for the arthritis and scoliosis.

Naproxen, Paracetamol full dose, and lansoprozol. Codeine 15mg if necessary.....I take one maybe 2 at night.

BP tablet, as well.....Oh yes the calcium and Vit D 3 {chalky tablet LOL} for the osteoporosis.

Does it show that exercise in the book? ......Hands on a hard surface, and put your leg out to the side slightly.......to strengthen the muscle.

If it does I would query it with the physio or someone else. I'm not trying to be a scaremonger but would hate the same thing to happen to someone else.  I mean I was fine after the first THR. Poss it was still osteopinia then but the 2nd one was osteoporosis???????

      I'm in the North East

Hi Eileen think you were unlucky with fracture. Yes it is in my book but all exercises in my book were first given by Physio and when in hospital I had 6 Physio sessions where she made sure I was doing them correctly. The biggest worry for me and surgeon was getting a break during the op but he knew to take extra care with his little hammers. Take each day as it comes

      Hi Ann

Yes I was unlucky with the fracture but because it will never heal and I'm permanently on 2 crutches I tend to mention it to anyone who has osteoporosis

It is up to them whether they check it out or not but if they know what happened thenthey have the facts about me and might want to ask.

I didnt have 6 physio sessions in hospital.....I think it was 2 where they came and showed me how to do them and then I did them and they watched to check that I was doing them OK

Since I already had one THR with no problems it didnt occur to me this would be different and it was four weeks post op before this happened.

As for taking each day as it comes......I do.  I know I will never walk unaided again but I'm blessed that I can drive and have a car as well as my husband having one. So I'm out and about as much as possible.

I'm a volunteer for Arthritis Care......I give community talks and I also do drop in stalls where people pass by and stop and ask about arthritis etc.

thanks guys! You put my mind at ease and I will notify the orthopedic now. Played phone tag with PCP last 4 days when I finally got them to enter info on the portal.  I was annoyed they had me start the prescription (one dose) without the info. Shocked with test results but here we go- my first long term script.

    Good luck with your recovery.
