Medication for hip pain.

I am going to have hip replacement surgery in a month.  I am taking Norco and Lyrica.  I am in serious pain.  My doctor say's he can only give me cortizone shot to help.  Is there anything else I can do before surgery?  It is so painful i can't walk.

Hi Del I'm really sorry your having to go through this dreadful pain, I suppose the good news is that your going to have your hip replacement very soon, have you tried ice, I have a fractured hip and find ice is great for easing pain, sometimes if you have been on certain meds a while they stop working, have you got a pair of crutches you could use to take some pressure off of your hip till it's done

Lyrica is for nerve pain???   When you stop it, make sure you wean off it,

My ortho would never let you have a corticosteroid injection then surgery- I had to wait 3 months after the last injection- the steroid prevents healing after surgery so I don’t think that’s an option- also it probably won’t assist with your pain if you are this painful already- I agree- ice, I find a wheeled walker is easier than crutches- toe touch with the walker, no more than 50% weight bearing on the bad leg

I used a cane before surgery, and ice was my best friend. Good Luck!

I agree with Lynn. No way would my guy do a Steroid injection one month prior. Said best to wait at least 3-4 months.

My GP told me that you should not have a cortisone injection near to a hip replacement. A hip steroid shot given during the year prior to hip replacement surgery increases the risk for surgical infection by 37% and risk of a second hip replacement surgery (within two years of the first replacement) by 53%. Taking oral steroids also increases the risk of osteonecrosis of the hip. I think I would probably avoid injections if I were having a new hip in the near future.

Hello del.....Waiting a month for surgery seems like a long time ...been there, done that...not easy at all and I truly sympathize with you. In the US pain meds are almost never given for bone on bone hip pain or residual pain, back, knees etc. The reason pain meds are almost impossible to get before surgery is due to the opioid epidemic which has created laws restricting physicians giving out pain scripts in most cases unless for surgical recovery or cancer patients.

Years ago pain clinics were in charge of my hip pain before THR surgery and pain contracts are signed and voided if ask for pain meds from another doctor even the hip surgeon prior to surgery. Pain meds were only given by special pain clinics ONLY, until they too are now also limited by illegal distribution and many were shut down. This has directly effected those who really need pain meds for serious dibilitating pain.

I took Tylenol the maximum dose a day helped since pain meds were not allowed for a recent revision. I stayed as active as possible, plenty of rest and also taking care to follow restrictions to eliminate possible dislocation before surgery. Even pain meds really don't help in many cases from bone on bone pain.

It's definately messed up, suffering is not humane. Yet if we ask for pain meds in the US we risk becoming labeled as "pain med seekers", no matter what the health crisis issue and is forever on our health records.

Really best to stay away from steroids as advised by many ... They Don't help much really, in my case it hurt worse! See more info on steroid injections online. It's job is to  eliminate swelling. Most studies show steroids can damage soft tissue.

Never could take a complicated situation and put into a simple explanation....

Keep posting wishing you the best of luck on your future surgery.

May I ask are you having anterior or posterior THR?

If anterior make sure your surgeon is extremely experienced with lots of surgeries under his/her belt.

    Hi there,

?I don't know how long you have been in pain or how long you have been waiting, but I can honestly tell you your life will be completely different after your surgery. I'm six months today post left posterior hip replacement and you would never guess! I was in terrible pain probably for the last six months pre - surgery, and not brilliant before that. My life revolved around when I could next take one of the many pain killer medications I was on and I was barely surviving. I couldn't sleep for more than an hour or two, couldn't put my shoes and socks on, do stairs or even walk in my job. Now, although I'm not perfect and will never be like my pre - arthritis days I'm very happy. I do get some pain and stiffness but the most I take are one dose of co - codamol and gabapentin per 24 hours. Once you come round from surgery the pain will be different, and from that day diminish a little by little. It's so liberating. Don't bother with steroids now, they might not even work, and as mentioned on here is not a good idea so close to surgery. Rest, feed yourself well and keep as healthy as you can. Walking is over - rated when it hurts so bad. Choose all your books, films, puzzles etc that will keep you occupied afterwards- most important!

Unfortunately that is all they can do because most meds will affect clotting and they need to make sure your heart and blood are in top conditions. What I did since they took me off everything but Tylenol was to go into the pool for 2 hrs. I would actually sleep in the hot water and get some relief. I also did a lot of art and put myself into a happy state of mind till I had to get up and walk. Even sitting was unbearable. Now, I can run, walk, no meds except for anti inflammatory for arthritis. Still going swimming 3 x per week and doing art. Good luck, stay positive and work on strengthening and stretching. Your recovery will be faster.
