Meds for shingles

Posted , 2 users are following.

I was diagnosed with shingles in the eye earlier this week by my opthalmologist. He started me on Famciclovir 250 mg 2 x's/day & an eye ointment Acyclovir 5% 4x's/day. My research is showing that the oral med, Famciclovir, should be 500mg 3 x's/day. I emailed my PCP after reading that & also because the opthalmologist & I never discussed my general malaise & fatigue. PCP thinks I should be on the higher & more frequent dose. My husband & a Dr friend, think I should follow the opthalmologist's orders. So confused!

Hi!  Sorry you aren't getting more responses and that you are going through this!  I had it in my eye several months ago.   I did Valacyclovir instead of the the one you are taking.  It was the commonly recommended dosage for shingles for that med.  The regimen for your med that your PCP advised it the common dosage, too.  I've found that opthalmologists here in College Station are not experts on shingles.  They just monitor and treat specific eye problems related to it.  If it's not too late, I would go with your PCP's recommendation!  This certainly affects your whole body (fatique and malaise).   I wish you all the best with your recovery!

Thank you for your response. Eye is starting to feel better today! Still just taking what the ophthalmologist has ordered. Guess I'll see how it goes.
