I haven't had one, but have been reading these forums for quite some time regarding this and related topics. It's my understanding that it could take a month, a few months, or there are some who report improvement even after one year. But when did you have the surgery performed? And were you informed as to what to expect in terms of recovery?

I had my membrane peel 8 days ago. I was very disappointed the day after my surgery when my surgeon took off my patch to see that there was no improvement. My vision was still dark in my bad eye. It was even worse than before. She gave me a hug and took my hands as we sitting together telling me that it was going to take time...a lot of time for the eye to heal and it WILL improve. It's been a week now since my surgery. I using 3 different eye drops. I can still feel the suture under my upper eyelid. She said it will eventually dissolve. I used to be able to see the Amsler grid with the bad eye. I was very curved, bowed and wavy. Telephone poles were very wavy and distorted. Now I can hardly see the grid. But what I can see now is a faint double image. Instead of being bowed and wavy it is now more squared with little ripples along the edges. I can't see close up at all even with reading glasses. Good thing my left eye is 20/20. The changing of the vitreous in my eye took away ALL of my floaters. That has improved 100%. My surgeon told me that changing the vitreous is going to give me a cataract that will have to be removed in the future. I have to see her (my surgeon) in two days for my first follow up. I live alone with no children. My wife passed away last year. Getting this surgery has been the hardest thing I've had to do in my 71 years. Have to drive 90 miles to to see her and getting someone to go with me is next to impossible. I had to stay overnight at a motel near the hospital to see her the next morning after the surgery. I had to put an ad in the paper and pay someone to stay with me to drive me home. This ordeal has been a TOTAL nightmare and it's still ongoing. The hospitals in my area can't do that kind of surgery so that's what makes it so hard. Finding people to go with me. Sorry for the long reply. Just letting you know.

90 miles'drive......unbelievable. Good wishes on the follow up. Do you know how long you had the membrane? It must've been bothering you or they wouldn't have suggested surgery.
Great you have 20/20 in the other.
Yes, cataract is the expected result......

I'm not sure how long I had the membrane. I first noticed a problem with the eye after a swim at the local pool. I was playing with some children. They let me use their swim goggles to mess around with. I had trouble getting them off my face as they were suctioned onto my face from the pressure of the deep water. A few hours later I too my wife grocery shopping. We came home and I was taking the groceries out of the car.. I looked up at my house and saw a HUGE black dot!!! I thought I had something in my eye. Went into the house and rinsed out my eye but it was still there. Couldn't get rid of it. Next morning I went to Doctors Urgent Care. They immediately sent me to an optometrist. He found the membrane then. Must have had it for a while but didn't notice it. That was about a year and a half ago. He wanted me to get the surgery then but I couldn't find a driver to stay with me for a couple of days near the hospital. My wife didn't drive as she had epilepsy that eventually killed her last year. The hunt was on for someone to go with me. Checked everywhere. Churches, senior organizations, ad in the paper etc. Finally my sister who was in poor health volunteered. The operation was supposed to be done on April 9. But on April 6 she got beat up (long story) on a walking trail. Her hip, 2 ribs and nose were broken. There went my surgery. I ended up taking care of her everyday. Now it's court time for us. But she was finally able to drive even though she's on a walker she went and stayed with me. We are driving to the hospital tomorrow morning leaving at 6 am. for my first follow up. I had to stop taking my eye drops yesterday as my eye started to hurt. One of the drops was Atropine, a dilator. My eye was in a constant state of pupil wide open. At night I couldn't see at all for some reason and I could before the surgery. More problems. I stopped taking them after a week and my vision with the bad eye improved. We'll see tomorrow. Been taking showers with swim goggles on. Hope she'll tell me I can go swimming and biking again this week. Still no improvement in my vision in the bad eye. Thanks for your replies Julissa. Very nice of you.
