Meniere's or Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)

A neighbour has been diagnosedd with BPPV but seems to have received no treatment to reposition the crystals. He has been prescribed betahistine (serc) which I didn't think was normally given for BPPV.

Any insight into this would be most welcome.  Thanks

Hi Mistibluey, Im a veteran MD victim, recently whilst the attacks seemed to have ceased I have been experiencing short but quite violent attacks of vertigo including darting eyes, these last under a minute and then I can continue my day, my ENT consultant felt it could only be BPPV which can occur in MD sufferers as there inner ear becomes damaged, so only yesterday I attended the physiotherapy dept to discuss this. The physio explained the reasons why BPPV occurs and all this can be found on Google, anyhow the outcome was there are no drugs that can prevent, or stop BPPV from happening, its controlled by certain head exercises that they will teach you, but catagorically no drugs can reduce or help this ailment, I suspect your neighbor has been fobbed off as the easy option and would suggest they return to the surgery and ask why they have not been referred to an ENT specialist, if they google the condition they can be more confident in their conversation having the knowledge that is available

      Hi Peter

Thanks for your reply. I did consult Doctor Google myself and you are confirming what I thought. If the betahistine can do nothing for him then he is getting no help at all as he has not seen a physio. My nieghbour is in his early 80s and has lost confidence about going out.

I have lived here less than 2 months and don't want to be too pushy or "know it all" about this but i will try to talk to his wife when I see her next.  The trouble is that the NHS is having to conserve money where  it can because of government cuts.

I'm sorry you now have BPPV to contend with as well as MD. I do hope you get the help you need and that your health improves soon.

      All best wishes.  Misti
