Hi, getting to the end of my tether now with Menieres/Vertigo and Migraine, i have been off work now 6mths driving me up the wall....no let up with Menieres, question i want to ask is has anyone had to give up work on medical grounds and had to medically retire, if so what is the process and what are you entitled to from your company and the state if anything.

Sorry to hear you have got to this stage without being able to manage your symptoms adequately. I understand how you feel. The pressure and stress are huge. I retired in August although I had reached retirement age years ago so it was straightforward but I resented Meniere’s interfering with my life choices. Anyway my sister took early retirement last year due to stress so I can tell you what I know about it. She worked for the nhs by the way. First are you in a company pension scheme?  If so you need to talk to them to find out what your reduced pension would be because that is what you would have to live on. You will need a sympathetic gp. You would have to then discuss with DSS to see if you would be entitled to state help. This is a very gruelling and protracted process and your financial situation will be examined minutely. Do you own your own house. Savings. Dependants. You get the picture. Having said all that I am very stable now and starting to enjoy my freedom. So something to look forward to. So first step is to get your gp on side. Good luck.

    Hi Steve:

Sorry to hear your challenges, fortunately, I currently work at home so I can deal with my issues a little easier than being in an office. However, I may be shifting jobs where I will have a large team and need to be in an office and this scares me. What if I am in an important meeting and I have an episode??? I am going to start taking Betahistine to see if that helps better. My doctor also told me if the betahistine does not work they can perform a reativey easy surgical procedure that will permanently eliminate the hearing in your ear, but has a very high success rate of completely eliminating the vertigo. It's called a Labyrinthectomy, look it up on Google, if may be an option to consider. Good luck, Greg

My ENT doctor put me on patches behind my ear and I'm also on a water pill.  This has checked my Menieres attacks but I have severe dry mouth.  As bad as the dry mouth is, the vertigo and nausea is worse and maybe this is an option to try.  I want to try and get on Betahistine but first have to get my ENT or a doctor to write a prescription for it.  The patches are what people use going on a cruise.   Just trying to give you another option.

    Good luck.

The patches are Scopolamine Transdermal System 1mg/ 3 days.  I also take a water pill but it is only 12.5 mg.

      Thanks Patrick!!

What exactly does the patches work for? Sorry for all the questions just trying to find something.

They are usually used for people going on a cruise.  On the box, it says Motion Sickness and Post-operative Nausea & Vomiting Prevention Patches.  They have done a good job of me not having vertigo and nausea BUT I have chronic dry mouth.  My quality of life is not good with the dry mouth issue even though it has checked my vertigo and nausea.   I still have some ringing in my left ear and lost some hearing in it, but some days better than others.  My druggist says that the patches are not supposed to be used more than a week or two.   I've been on them for 3-4 months.   He says that not only will it cause dry mouth but it will effect my urinary track and eventually I may develop problems swallowing because it dries up everything!   I really can't take the vertigo and if someone has it bad and nothing else is helping, might try these for a while.
