Meniscus repair and cyst removal

I just had my meniscus repaired and a cyst removed from my left inside knee.

two small holes were made just under my knee cap, and on the inner part of my knee an incision was made to remove the cyst (4 stitches).

I spent 2 days in the hospital recovery.  I was feeling really good and getting around on my crutches well with minimal swelling and pain to the area.

ive now been home 3 days being a couch potato and doing my best to recover.  I notice when I lift my leg under my own power it feels like the inner ligament is under stress and I feel shooting pain in my knee, so I try not to move my knee unless assisted by my own hands.  I can bend the knee just fine, no pain, with my hand assistance.

last night with my knee resting straight on the couch I noticed discomfort.  I stood up with my crutches and noticed my knee was swelling up and became very painful in the area the cyst was removed.  It became very painful to keep straight after.  After 5 days now of recovery feeling better each day, it now feels like I just got out of the OP and I'm back to day one.  It pretty swollen now on the inner part, inside, cyst removal area of my knee.

can someone tell me what might be happening and is causing the slight swelling and pain now?

Its repairing itself. Even though you probably think the scope to be minor, they pump air in to cause the skin to balloon. This gives them the room to snip and clip and clean. Removing the cyst is some form of cutting and sealing, possibly laser. All of that damage has to slowly find its way back in place. Ice and elevation plus any excercise program that might have been prescribed. Generally physical therapy after meniscus repair is part of the deal.

Hi Ryan. .. as painful as it is... you do need to keep it moving.... take your pain med a while before you do gentle exercise. ... give them time to kick in... ice and elevate afterwards... I had the meniscus removed from my knee a few years ago... from what I recall. ... took a few weeks to get back to

    " normal"...

    Hi Ryan

I had repairs to the meniscal on both sides and 6 weeks on there is still some residual swelling and I am elevating my leg with ice several times a day.  My physio and surgeon have both said it can take a while for all the swelling to go. My physio also told me that resting too long can cause the knee to swel up againl, and to keep doing little-but-often exercises.

My advice would be to check in with your specialist or physio as they should be able to advise you on the best combination of exercises and elevation for your particular situation.

    Good luck!

can I ask how things are going now?

I have a meniscus tear and a cyst too, I haven't been to the hospital yet but my GP said I will most likely need surgery.

I had my surgery on Jan 5.  About 4 weeks ago.  I was on my feet without crutches after 2 weeks.  Im feeling really good now.  Chasing my 14 month old son around the house.  That first week and a half was tough though.  I have a little tiny tightness still where the cyst was removed, but everything is healing up nicely.  I can begin biking soon I think.  I go to Physical therapy 2-3 times per week and had massages done to reduce swelling.  All good.
