mesalazine (pentasa) - low white cell count

I have been taking 2g of the above for 6 months and now have a low white cell count. I am having another blood test today to check.

Has this happened to anyone? And if so what were the next steps?

I'm taking mesalazine 1200mg XL prolonged release two a day and as far as I'm aware I haven't had a problem.  What are the symptoms of a low white cell count?  I am always tired but never get asked for a check up!

regular blood test result rather than symptoms... my hospital is doing blood tests every 6 months for 18 months or so to check that there are no side effects.

These are rare but they should show in the first year I am told.

I would not have known if they hadnt told me. anyway I had another test today to check (it could be a one off) and will get result tomorrow. I will post if anything interesting happens.

Always check to see what kind of bad things can happen when you take certain drugs. Drugs dot com is a good place to check.

Yes pentasa can case a low white blood cell count. http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcmed.nsf/pages/fpcpentr/$File/fpcpentr.pdf

They call it rare but I know that my son almost died from Asacol because the medical community believed that 7% was considered rare. They have since pulled Asacol here in the States.
