Mesenteric adenitis

I went to the doctor because I was having pain in my right lower stomachs so I thought I potentially had appendicitis but he did a cbc which my white blood cell count was up and a ct scan and a physical exam and said I had mesenteric adenitis he did also say if the pain did not lessen get a follow up in 3-7 Days how exactly does a doctor tell a diffrence between the two problems being appendicitis and mesenteric adenitis with the symptoms being so similar
