Metacarpel fracture

Posted , 2 users are following.

I fractured my 5th metacarpel, an oblique fracture of the shaft. Original x-Ray showed it was not displaced and I was in a cast for 2 weeks. At my follow up fracture had displaced and I had rotational deformity. Surgery was recommended. A week ago I had a k wire inserted. My surgeon has said he will remove my cast after 4 weeks but won't remove the wire for 3 months!!! This is contrary to everything I've read and I wonder if anyone has experienced this? How can I move my hand with a wire remaining?

rebecca20204, I don't have a clue, but I would think that you would be able to move your hand, since there are alot of people who have plates and screws and rods, my brother has screws.rods, and plates in his leg his whole leg had major surgery and the only thing he didn't break was his kneecap and he still has all of his hardware in his leg and that was 2011. Did the Doc that did your surgery have good reviews when you checked him out to see about his crudentials ? Keep us updated and let us know how everything goes.

      Hi Eva96035,

Thanks for your response. Yes my surgeon was recommended to me as I work in healthcare. He only told me the wire would remain for 3 months when I was in recovery so I didn't get a chance to discuss it further. I have since asked an orthopaedic nurse that I know and she said this isn't the norm. I have an appointment with the consultant next week so I'll know more then. I may request a second opinion. I'll update on progress. I thought that there was some hardware that stayed in permanently as you described for your brother and other hardware such as k wires which are temporary just for immobilization!

      Rebecca20204,

I surely didn't know that about the k wires, I was assuming that doctors should know what they are doing, I should know better with my experience this time around. They sure take their time getting to the bottom of things I know that much. I wonder if it was them how fast they would be fixed .... Keep me updated to how things work out with you.
