Metformin 500mg is usually taken after each meal ie 3 times a day.  Metformin SR (slow release) is taken once a day.  They are usually well tolerated but tend to make the tummy rumble.  I take 500mg SR per day and find I fart a lot but there are no other real problems.  I take it after breakfast and find I get very hungry and a bit snappy just before lunch.  Eating an apple helps this.   My blood sugar is quite well controlled but I do need daily exercise (eg a walk in the morning) to help the metformin be effective.  I try not to sit down in the mornings to keep the muscles moving.  Good luck!

I have all the rumbles & pain but wish I could fart more as my gut swells up till it is as tight as a drum

You could try taking Colpermin (peppermint oil caps, bought over the counter at chemists) which is very safe and can work wonders with trapped wind/IBS.  The rumbles tend to improve after taking Metformin for a while.  It must be taken with or just after food otherwise the rumbles will be worse. Milled linseed (cheapest at Aldi) also helps the digestive processes.

I really didn't get on well with Metformin (both SR and the original version). I guess my stomach was overly sensitive to it. I'm now looking into other alternatives to help me ovulate however, I've heard that it's worked wonders for other people. The key is to stick it out for as long as possible, any side effects should subside after 3-6 months. Unfortunately that wasn't the case for me but, everyone is different so stick with it if it works for you smile

Do you think the slow release is better?

I do, if I take it in the morning after breakfast.  When I took it at night (SR) I found the rumbles/wind disturbed my sleep.

If it's for diabetes, persist and try the measures I mentioned above.  It really is the best and safest first line drug treatment for Type 2.

I was taking metformin ER 1500mg a day. Started out at 500 first week and Dr upped it over 3weeks to 1500. After four months i stopped taking the pill. I had severe diarrhea 6X a day, mostly durring the night. 2Hrs after taking the pill it came back out, the whole pill! With all the nauseous feelings I only threw up once including the pill. Considering taking the pill again for one more try before seeking a fertility Dr. I read so many success stories and hopefully if i can stick it out, I'll be one too!
