Metformin

I am a Type 1 and take slow release Metformin (2 X 1g} daily as well as insulin. What are the benefits of Metformin apart from lowering blood sugar? I have been taking it for many years but started having an upset stomach recently. My diabetes nurse said I could halve my dose. So I have been doing for 6 weeks, my blood sugar has stayed the same and my stomach has improved, but I am worried that perhaps I shouldn't be doing this. Can anyone advise? thanks.

Metformin may reduce the absorption of sugars from food, and reduce the release of sugars from the liver.

I thought it was mostly for type2 diabetics, I'm not sure how commonly it is used for type1.
