Metformin for PCOS

Hey,
I’m 25 years old and have been struggling to cope with excessive hair growth in most areas since i was 11. After wasting nearly £2000 on laser hair removal a few years ago my doctor finally referred me to the dermatologist who would like to put me on metformin or something similar.
Is anyone on this particularly for the excessive hair? Just wondered if it works and how quickly results are. Any side effects?
Thanks!

When you say "my doctor" are you referring to your endocrinologist? If no, then you should see one before starting any kind of therapy.
Are you overweight? Even if you're not, pay attention to your waistline. If you tend to gain weight in that area (love handles, abdomen...), eating right and exercising can do wonders. Many women who were not helped by metformin report reduction in facial hair once they lose weight.

My BMI would state I’m overweight etc and I always find it extremely hard to lose weight. I have been dieting and very careful with what I eat for years now. Even when I was 2 stone lighter there was no reduction in hair

It's a complex question between weight and PCOS. Weight does not cause it, but it aggravates its symptoms. On the other hand, PCOS makes it diificult to lose weight and keep ti off. Healthy nutrition and exercise is the key. No sugar, moderate carb diets are good because they do not cause your glucose/insulin levels to spike.
also be careful with fruits. Fructose is metabolized in the liver and too much of it leads to fatty liver and insulin resistance, which goes hand in hand with the PCOS.

I have PCOS. I had excessive hair on my face and chest. I used the multi-needle electrolysis method. It's been a life saver. Much of the hair disappeared. Some of it comes back from time to time so I go for top ups but it's no where near the quantity or thickness that it was.
