Metformin Side Effects

My husband has been on Metformin for a few years now for Type 2 diabetes. Lately, he's been saying that he has Multiple Schorosis, but I wonder if his symptoms are really a side effect of the Metformin. I read that Metformin can cause muscle weakness. Can its side effects mimic MS? Thanks!

my husband is on Metformin, seems no issues. Does your husband happen to take a Statin? If so look up reviews on those and side affects.

Maria, I too take Metformin and have had strange sensations in my muscles. I know that if my blood sugar is high and I lift weights my muscles start to cramp and sometimes severely. Another symptom is weakness, just don't have the energy to do anything. Only a doctor can tell but just wanted to share some of my symptoms.

Another listed issue with metformin is B12 deficiency, so if you haven't been tested recently, and especially if you aren't eating a lot of red meat, make sure you take a B12 supplement, and the best of these are the sublingual tablets.

It's possible that B12 deficiency could cause muscle problems.

My husband was on Metformin as well. He developed a rare disease called Myasthenia. This disease effects the nerves. It first effected his eyelids. The eyelids will close automatically. He had to use his fingers to open the eye. Then it started effecting other muscles in his body. He fell a few times because the leg muscles would give out. Very few doctors know of this condition. We were very lucky to find a specialist in the area that diagnosed him. The final straw was when he was rushed to the ER, not being able to breath. There is very little knowledge of this disease. The Drs weren't even sure of how to treat it.

Wow, I've been having weakness in my legs especially when driving for a while. This has me worried because I exercise everday and I also get that eyelid fluttering. Is there a Metformin alternative ? I thought this drug was safer than most.

I have been on Metformin for a few years.

They gave me diarrhoea to start off with and the Chemist suggested I took both tablets together after supper. This has worked no more problems.

I think if your husband thinks he has MS this needs to be confirmed by a GP or a neurologist.
