Has anyone had any success in coming off MTX with the help of healthy diet and vitamins?

Hi Mazz, I have an appointment on Monday with Dr. Donald Thomas who wrote the encyclopedia (literally) on Lupus. I inject Methortrexate weekly and its havoc on my system (and hair!). I plan on acting the Doctor exactly that question about diet and vitamins. I take Vitamin A and eat a largely Vegan diet with some fish, I’m afraid to go off MTX BUT I’m also afraid to stay on it! What has it done to you?

Thanx Sunny....You put that very well....damned if you do and damned if you dont is the way it seems with Methotrexate...I recently had 3 months of acupunture and took boswellia for the pain....I have a pretty clean diet, fish oil, tumeric etc,  juice, exercise and meditate...but when i didnt take MTX for abt 10 days my body started to stiffen up in pain again...fatigue and crankiness....not pleasant.  I so hope that research may come up with something better...I am also working on the health of the gut with probiotics etc after listening to the Arthritis Summit recently....if anyone has some suggestions that helped them please let us know....many thanx smile

Sure of course I will share info that’s why WE are all here lol..what is your diagnosis? RA? One thing I will say is initially my MTX dose was 15mg weekly (orally) I was hanging over the toilet, wicked headache, exhausted. Now I switched to the injectable version of MTX and the dose was 12.5mg which was better but only a little better. So I lowered it to 10mg and its very tolerable! I told my doctor and she said I could continue as long as the symptoms were kept at bay,so its been 5 weeks and I feel ok. Still get a little headache, metallic taste, and have to sleep all day after injecting but I think because its an injection its faster acting. I will ask this Specialist a long list of questions because I fear the long term use of MTX! Sometimes in life we have to choose the lesser of 2 evils right? Will be in touch and best wishes to you!
