Methotrexate and alcohol

Hi guys,

Just after a bit of advice please. I am due to inject my MTX in a couple of hours and have just done my first day of my final year at uni and really just want ONE glass of wine!

Does anyone know if this is ok on same day?! My rheum nurse used to say didn't really make a difference on tablets but i wonder whether that still applies with injection?

Thanks in advance and hope you're all ok!

Xx

Hi. I also self inject methotrexate. I've always drank on the days of my jab . If I was to go out tonight then I'd have my jab tommoro. That's purely cause the jab makes me feel rough the next day.

    Enjoy your nite out?

      Thank you :-)

Sarah, hi. I'm 61 and live in deepest France. I've had arthritis since I was 16, been on every med that has been banned etc etc, now on methotrexate injections, about to go on Bio injections. I drink. I'm in France, the wine is good, I daresay a bottle a day. My specialist in Cahors said, dont worry, carry on. Look at the alcohol content. I drink wine 11% or 12% max on the label, no problem. There are many more people far worse off than me and you. Enjoy life...good luck..

      Hi,

Thank you! I decided I didn't feel like it in the end! At the grand old age of 28 i would apparently rather have a cup of tea!!

I'm sorry you've been struggling for all these years, I am glad you at least have good wine! And your positive outlook on life is inspiring!

And i hope the bio injections work better for you :-)

Nope.   Instructions are quite clear with MTX:   no more than two standard drinks per week and not within two days of taking MTX.   I inject on Tuesdays so if I want a drink I wait until thursday.

I think some people make their own rules Sarah, my rhemotologist replied when I asked her if I could have a drink because I am going on holiday " you go and enjoy yourself and have a drink don't worry " so I did and all is fine, just don't go mad I guess

Yes. You know your own body. If your Consultant says fine...good stuff..

MTX can effect liver function, if you browse through this forum you'll see at least one has gone off MTX for that reason.   Alcohol also can affect liver function that is why the precautions relating to alcohol consumtion are mentioned by the manufacturers, a double whammy if you like.   If you ad other meds to the mix that also can affect the liver then your not doing your liver any favours.   All the makers of MTX are suggesting is that you limit your intake and don't drink on the same day.   If you simply must have a drink on the day you inject; simple, change the day you inject.   Still it is your liver to do with as you want!

Yes Tony. And I take Folic Acid tabs 2 days after the injection of MTH. I think it is a real problem, this alcohol with MTH. My Consultant in Cahors, says, low 11% wine, no problem, and dismissed it. Some say no alcohol. Really depends who says what.

At the end of the day, we come back to the real point of.....

No one knows how to treat RA...

Hmmm, every Doc is different I suppose, I used to take folic acid one day after the MTX injections, but lately have been taking another med containing folic acid four hours afte injecting to counteract the nausea.   My Doc said no more than two standard drinks per week and not within a day or two of injection.   As it turns out that is exactly what is written on the manufacturers data sheet.   That aside, if the Doc's advice differs from the manufacturers data sheet, who should you beleive?   That'd be the manufacturers for me.

I like a scotch or three, so when I mix I have half a nip instead of a full nip, that way I can have four drinks per week.   It's all about greed for me, and I'm very greedy!

But then the manufacturers also say you cannot take NSAIDs with it but yet my rheumatologist makes me take regular Naproxen!

I don't know who to believe with anything anymore!

All i know is that i am so tired, of this illness, of meds and quite frankly of life!

Thank you for your input, i appreciate it all

Can't say as I blame you.   I'm now at the point where I can do nothing, can't use cutlery, need my wife to help me dress, can't sleep, my shoulder just aches none stop and every little movement I make sends shooting pains up and down my arms, this is not life I pictured for myself and certainly not the life I want to live.
