Methotrexate and heavy periods

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have barely had a period for quite some time. Maybe a tiny bit of spotting but after 7-8 weeks on MTX I am having the heaviest period I have had since I was a teenager! Has anybody else had this problem and should I be concerned?

=12.0ptYes, Methotrexate can account for heavy bleeding. Though this is less discussed relative to other side effects, meth can screwed up your cycle right from being irregular to occasional spotting in between periods. I would suggest doing complete blood count to check other parameters such as platelets/WBCs are normal or not. Discuss with your doctor and OB-GYN about your hormones and see if medications can throw your hormones off balance which would affect your period. May be BC pills could help, as it is you should not get pregnant while on Meth, so you don’t need cycle. If this continues, try adding haematinic to your regimen.

Thank you so much Chris. Sometimes I feel I'm being a hypochondriac with all the side effects. I have an appt with my doctor Wednesday and will mention it. Thank you for taking the time to reply 😊

I would contact your doctor or consultant just to be on the safe side.

Do you take Folic acid to countact the side effects of the MTX

Thanks John. I do take folic acid every day except MTX day. I agree I should consult somebody as I possibly am anaemic with the blood loss. My doctor makes me feel like a nuisance and my specialist took 8 days to return my call last time. I mentioned in my last post I have a meeting with the senior partners at the doctors Wednesday so hopefully their attitude towards me will change 😊

Good luck with the meeting Lisa.

I guess i am lucky as i haven't had any problems with MXT and i have been on 20mgs for 13 years now.

I also take medication for heart problems to.

Thank you John. That is reassuring. I hate to admit that I think it does work for me as I seem to suffer every side effect going including hair loss, nausea and ulcers but when I had a good run on it they seemed to ease off. The problem is my infection indicator keeps going through the roof so they keep stopping and starting me again.

I also have peripheral neuropathies but don't take anything for that.... I long for the pain of that to come back. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ walk in the park after this! Well, a stumble! 😊

      Lisa,

Because i worked for the electricity industry and went into all sorts of places with people coughing and sneezing i started to take 1000mgs of slow release vitamin C, Also 1000mgs of cod liver oil capsules. Buy them in Tesco and take last thing at night.

I find that these really do help to counter the possible colds and flu.

They don't mess with anything else so are quite safe to take.

I actually walk twice a day with the dog and play bowls during the summer. Go out sea fishing on a boat all year to.

Thank you again John. I think I will get some of those. Can't do any harm!

You seem to have quite an active life. Good on you. When I am just dealing with the neuropathies I am far more active than I am at the moment but im going to get there. Just need more support from my doctors which I am having a meeting about tomorrow so I haven't lost all my fighting spirit 😊

      You will get there Lisa.

Soon the warmer weather will be here and we will be out and about.

You never know you may just walk past me when i am walking the dog or if your at the coast you may me getting off a boat with the fish i have caught.

Good luck tomorrow and let us know how it goes.

I live quite near the coast and would happily watch fishermen with their 'catches' ....... Unless it's lobster.... Then I would mug you for it!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I will of course let you know. β˜€οΈβ˜€οΈ Sunshine thoughts for the day 😊

    Hi

Methotrexate was not ment for people with psoriasis. It just happened that people who where takingΒ MTX for another complain had psoriasis. And the psoriasis shall we sayΒ ( improved ) but by how much ????. This is the case with a lot of medication.Β  mtx as you GP to come of it.

David I am not taking MTX for psoriasis although I do have that now. I am taking it for psoriasis inflammatory arthritis. Although the side effects are awful I can't deny it is helping the RA so I am going to continue for now 😊

I'd like to know about this too. I was on Cyclosporine which is also a Immune lowering medication. I noticed when i started that I had no Period for the first month then I had one on the second and now I'm going through it again with no Period. I have never had children (I dont think Im actually able to have children, never really understood as Doctors I've been to about it are really useless) and before I took Cyclosporine or MTX I had a regular (Painful) Menstual cycle.
