Methotrexate and nausea?

Posted , 5 users are following.

My sister has now started on Methotrexate, but suffering terrible nausea, which she was warned of, does this normally wear off?  and how long (if it does) before benefits are felt.  She took some persuading to go on this drug, so fingers crossed for her, nothing else has worked. (inflammatory arthritis, very painful stiff knee, and wrist!) Thank you for any knowledge!

I have learned that I do much better when I eat a really big meal at night then take it before I go to sleep. I am groovy in the am but no nausea. Not a small meal either. Be glad when Medical Marijuana is available for this

I take mine at night. By the morning I am fine. I deviated from this recently, returning from a holiday I took methotrexate a couple of hours before a travel sickness pill then had hallucinations!! Don't do this ha ha ha. Thankfully I didn't lose the plot completely but it reminded me to never take this drug in the morning as it doesn't suit me and actually, not to mix it with anything else. Suggest to your sister that she goes to bed after her dose. smile

Hi, I've been on Methotrexate for a few years now. The sickness can be awful but does wear off a heck of a lot after taking for a few weeks. My doctor prescribed metacloperamide to counteract the sickness and it helps a lot. The couple of days after the injection are the worse then she should be okay for the rest of the week. It's been a miracle drug for me. The benefits creep up on you and I only realised how good it was when I had to come off it for 6 weeks so I could have an operation. My joints stiffened up and I was in agony and couldn't wait to start it again. Hopefully the sickness will wear off soon and she'll start to feel better x

    Hi Linda,

The only advice I can give for the nausea is to cut down on caffeine (even coke... For some reason it was advice I was given and helped) also I found sucking on mini ice lollies especially citrus ones helpful. Ginger also helps and she can ask her doctor for Biotene mouthwash. Although this is more to help with the dry mouth it again helped me.

Wishing you all the best of luck 😊

Im sorry, this drug caused digestive problems and stomach pain for me and like for many others i know as well, was very ineffective. Since het inflammation is not managed well by her reumatologist, further damage is being dine until he can help manage this. The only thing that has helped me and so many others is a steroid or prednisone pak lasting 5 to 10 days. This is the ONLY treatment that worked to get it under control. I also had a dental issue at one time that was contributing to the high inflammation rates causing extra pain. Calcium with D3 with a good multi vitamin and fish oil capsules help with inflammatory pain. Magnesium (glycinate) has taken away all fibromyalga pain for me going on 3 years. Is your sister being treated by a reumatologist or a general practioner.. The medication i have been stablized in for about 4 years with very few flsirs..anout 1 per year, having no side effects at all for me is called Plaquenil.

Thanks for your reply...my sister tried Plaquenil for 8 months with no affect whatsoever.......Steroid injections have been marvellous, but they are only temporary, and only so many can be given...will tell my sister about the other things metioned....thanks again, and good health!

I truly believe some RA cases continue in flareup due to some other underlying infection that has not been identified, general lifestyle, stress management, diet and food sensitivities or underlying unidentified nutritional deficiencies..
