methotrexate concerns continued

I heard everyone talking about drinking but no one elaborated on the hair loss situation. Do people typically lose a significant amount of hair? Is it bad enough that you need a wig or hat at all times?  Does it eventually grow back or as long as you take methotrexate you lose hair?  As far as the drinking goes my doctor point blank said do not drink at all. I am only on my second dose so I'm sure I will learn lots of more info about this drug along the way.

    hi melipierce.

I have been taking methotrexate for 2 years now. Currently my dosage is 15mg and I have no hair lose although I was taking 25mg for a couple of months and did notice some thinning of my hair but only very minor. My hair has returned to normal on the lower dosage. As for alcohol. I was advised not to drink and have been told by several people that they have been sick and suffered with severe hangovers. Hope this helps.

I can't comment on the drinking as I don't but I have had minor thinning of the hair. I have had quite a bit 'snap off' but not at the roots. I have very long hair though! I wish you all the best with the treatment. Everybody has different symptoms some worse than others but maybe you will be one of the lucky ones who tolerate it well 😊 this is a great forum for asking any questions. There are some good people on here willing to help 😊😊

I was on it 2 full months.  My hair was thinning a little from the Pred. but really got so thin I had to cut it short and it still was bad. I am off now and it is supposed to come back, but not growing. It seems like it may be coming in, just not growing in length yet.  Dr say it will come back. I never had a drink and had quite a few very uncomfortable side effects.  It just upped my SED rate 3 times more. Now they have just upped my Pred.

I have been on Metoject for 4 years and  have suffered with hair loss continually during this time.  My hair used to be very thick and now very thin looking especially noticeable at the front and top.  Gets me down.  However I hope that it will come back after stopping the drug (whenever that happy day arrives!).

Sorry to hear that! Hopefully the meds at least worked so your losing your hair is not all in vain. How long did it take for your symptoms to improve once you started the meds?

I am taking the methotrexate for RA and after a few weeks on 15mg I felt a real improvement which has continued.  An odd flare up of symptoms from time to time.

When I stopped taking it mine is coming back slowly.  I did not do well on that drug and they took me off.

I have been taking MTX for 13 months now and when I first started taking it, I appeared to lose a lot of hair.  Mine is long and used to be thick.  Recently, I have been losing noticeable amounts of hair again, though people would still say I have thisk hair but I can tell that it is much thinner than it used to be.

I stopped taking Pred in October, after 3 years

As for alcohol, I too was told not to drink.  I went off it anyway and the smell makes me feel ill!

And!  Recently, my liver enzymes have decided to develop a life of their own, which is another good reason not to drink.

Hi, I've been on methotrexate 22.5mg for 5 years now.

I've had slight hair loss but nothing enough to notice. Just seems to come out in the brush a bit more than normal.

It certainly won't be bad enough to wear a wig. Only I notice mine in the plug hole and brush. No one else.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

    Hope all goes well

Coincidentally I was discussing this with a friend today.  If you go to the Boots website, you will find a number of remedies.  I have been using Nourkrin Woman with good effect - I see they are now offering a year's supply with free hair care products, which I am going to try.  I just take 1 capsule a day, so am going to go for the 6 month supply.

I've been on for a couple of months mow. I've only had a couple glasses of wine during this time. My blood results came back just fine. They worry about the function of your kidney so as long as you go for blood work regularly and don't over indulge, it should be fine. Just try and take it from there. THIS is a heavy duty drug and should be treated with respect. As for the hair loss, I haven't gone bald. I've just noticed some hair loss but not a tremendous amount.
