Methotrexate funky actions

Posted , 7 users are following.

Hi everyone,

I started my RA treatment a couple of weeks ago. The first drug I was prescribed was MTX with Plaquenil.

Why do I have the feeling that before treatment I had less pain???

This is my third week with MTX 7.5 m/week and my fingers, shoulders and arms are really aching like never before. My fingers are swollen like never before.

Is this what they call aggressive treatment and the drug is fighting the inflammation so hard, or something else is happening???

Any idea?

I am taking MTX and other drugs and have similar symptoms, my Dermatologist told me that my liver enzymes are elevated and these symptoms are caused by my liver.

I struggle to climb the stairs.

I am going to stop some of the drugs, though I am going to keep taking the MTX

Have you had any blood tests recently?

    Thanks every one.

The theory is that my body is getting used to it is still valid for me.

Elevated liver enzymes are still possible.

I haven't done blood tests lately cause I just started treatment 3 weeks ago.

By the way, what I meant by more pain is not general feeling of fatigue.  I do still have the RA symptoms but much more severe than I had before I started treatment.

    Weird !!!!

I'm surprised you haven't had any blood tests too.

My GP sends out forms every month, aswell as my Consultant, who is very keen on his bloods!

When are you due to see him/her again?  Did the clinic give you an SOS number, or a numbeer to contact the Specialist Nurse?

I had blood tests every two weeks, then every 4 weeks and now every month - and it can take 6 months for it to work. My pain intensified too for a while, and still goes up and down, but they have to keep trying different drugs to find what works for you as an individual. We are all different.

It is too strong for your system. If they gave you this drug and your body is actually not very well, it isn't surprising you feel ill. Go back and tell them to do something about it. This is just terrible that people are suffering like this. We have to realise that tax does not work on all bodies in the same way and it simply doesn't work for a lot of people just as it does work for many others. The problem is that when it doesn't work it is suggested it is the patient and when it works it's the drug. Either way, it is too strong in some cases -

I have been taking MTX for a year now and when I was first prescribed it, I had blood tests every week and saw my Consultant [Dermatologist] every week.  I now see him every 2 months but with the understanding that I can contact him whenever I need to.

Have you tried ringing your Consultant's secretary?  I think you should.

I also had weekly bloods done when I was first diagnosed. As the body settled into the treatment the tests became less freqeunt. I now have them every two months.

Go back to your GP, as somone else suggested.

💖 I still have monthly blood tests done. The drug is very powerful,  as someone already said. It's a good thing though as they can keep an eye on any changes in the liver function. Hope you get it sorted x
