Methotrexate injections vs. pills?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hello all, I am new to this site and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on the side effects of methotrexate injections vs. the oral pills? i have been on methotrexte for about 4 months i made myself stay at 5mg. as i was so sick when we upped the dose, and it seems to be working quite well, other than the usual side effects. Today my rheumatiologist recommended we start the injections as he feels this will help with the nausea and such.. I would greatly appreciate any and all tips and advice. Thank you   Penelope

    Hi,

I was on the methotrexate pills in various doses for about 7 years and I was fine. Then I started feeling very sick after I had taken them (and also the day after). I was put on the injections and it's so much better. I self inject (They come in a pre filled inject pen) which is very easy to use, really doesn't hurt very much and due to the fact the drug isn't going into your stomach doesn't make you feel sick. This is definitely something you should try to reduce your side effects. If there is anything else you need to know about this please let me know and I'll be happy to try and answer your questions. Joe

I have been on the pills 20mgs for 13 years and have never had any side effect.

It was made very clear to me that taking the Folic Acid ( 5mgs ) every day but the MTX day was important,

I take 1000 mgs of slow release vitamin C to keep the colds and flu away which also seems to work.

I am on a number of pills for my heart to.
