Methotrexate sickness for a few days is that normal? Anyone switched to injections?

So I've only just started taking methotrexate last week, I've slept lots n been really tired? I work full time but had no energy in the evenings? I keep getting waves of nausea even today, I took MTX Saturday?

My question is are sll these things the norm n would I feel less sicky if I had the injections?

Ps do other people have alcohol at all?

Thanks x

    Hi,

I switched from mtx tablets to the injections as I suffered with nausea and I did find they got rid of that but I felt so generally unwell on mtx that I eventually switched to hydroxychloroquine (plaquenil) and have been fine on that for about 6 yrs now. I think the tiredness will always be a problem though. I'm not 100% sure about alcohol best to check that out but I think the odd glass is OK.

Hi Caraj, what you describe seems to be normal for Mtx. You may find it settles down in a week or so. It's a strong drug and takes a while for the body to become accustomed to it. The same happened to me, plus on going nausea, dry skin, mouth ulcers and thinning and falling hair. My Rheumatologist was sensitive to this, lowered my dose from 25 to20 mgs and also to the injectable form. That's made such a great difference. Have you been told to take folic acid too ? It really helps. I take 5 mg every day except for the day I have my Mtx. Alcohol - depends on what your Rhuemy told you as advice is mixed. I was told that I could have up to a max of 4 units per week. To start with I was tee total as I wanted to see what my blood tests and liver function was. Mine were good so now I have a drink ( mostly wine) a couple of times a week. If my liver function ever shows any problems then I'd stop straight away. Good luck !
