Methotrexate tablet or injection?

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have been taking Methotrexate for about a year in the tablet form. I am taking 15mg but always suffer from nausea for approx 48hrs. Does anyone know if the same side effects appear if using the drug in the injection form? Thinking of asking to change.

I used to feel ill but I suggest that you try taking the pills at night. I found that made a big difference (you may still feel ill but will sleep it off!) I'm on a higher dose than you.

    Good luck

I used to be the same when I had Mtx in the tablet form. It also caused mouth ulcers, falling hair, headaches and very dry skin. At that point I was taking 25mg tablets. My Rhueamatoligist switched me to injections and lowered the dose to 20mg. Most times I'm ok now with very few occassions when I have nausea for anything between 12 - 24 hrs. I still often have the Mtx headache that many people get put paracetamol usually does the trick. I also find taking it before bed helps.Do you take folic acid ? I have to take 5mg every day EXCEPT the day I have my injection. That's supposed to help things too.

The injection form is definitely better than the tablet form. Im on 20mgs injection but still feel sickly for about 48 hours afterwards. Like the others tell you you can take extra folic which does help.

I used to take tablet form 4 months, i always suffered from nausea and vomitting. sad I reported to my doctors in rheumatology department during those 4 months then they changed it to injections form. Since then, I have been in much better position with lesser side effects but had odd chest pains so they reduced the doses. Then I was okay. my advised to listen to your body, monitor any side effects you have regularly and keep the doctors informed. Everyone reacts different to tablets and injections and the amount of doses given so you should ask them and see what they says. smile Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the advise. I do take folic acid but only one tablet once a week. I will discuss changing to injections or dropping the dose down to below 10mg. I guess its worth a try. Since my first post though, I have found that peppermint mints seem to help quite a lot. Peppermint tea had no effect though.
