MHA 543 Assignment - Innovation and its Influence on the Healthcare Workforce

There are a number of industries that have used technology to improve their workforce and customer satisfaction. Perhaps the most popular of these is the retail industry with names like Target and Amazon using software like Omnichannel and Artificial Intelligence to improve their customer experiences and increase profits. “Omnichannel provides individuals with seamless experiences regardless of how they engage with a company.” (Devine, 2019) Customers are now able to use an app to browse for products and coupons online as well as product availability at a specific store location. In addition to these services they are able to schedule an in store pickup of the purchased item and at some locations even have a guest associate bring the items to their vehicle.

These services can be adapted to the healthcare setting in a number of ways, using software patients can now view appointments, get lab results, request prescriptions and email their physicians all through a patient portal online. This is most helpful to the frontline staff in hospitals that assist in physician offices and at outpatient locations, they can set up appointments for patients without them having to wait around after seeing a physician. Call volumes can be lowered as a result and patient satisfaction would improve because the patient has easier access to their care because it is available all in one place.

“Artificial Intelligence uses data and algorithms to teach computers and machines to perform certain tasks or to make decisions based on data.” (Devine, 2019) This increased use of algorithms in conjunction with previous treatment plans for patients is most helpful to physicians and other clinical staff as it can provide new insight into treatment plans. Currently there are companies like IBM that are using systems to collect previous treatments of cancer patients and current symptoms to look for a new treatment regimen. This helps physicians to treat patients and provide a possibility of remission and perhaps one day it will mean assisting with a cure for many terminal diseases. Technology is helping so many industries grow and accomplish much more at a faster rate, it is connecting people and information in situations that were not possible before and will continue to improve the healthcare workforce as a whole.
