Mid foot fusion.

Hiya. I had a mid foot fusion 2 weeks ago now. I am really struggling with non weight bearing. Has anyone else dealt with this please. I am crying with frustration. My husband and I are very keen walkers and it is really hard not being able to get out and about under my own steam.

look forward to hearing your tips.

    Michelle,

I'm 69 years old...I had this HORRENDOUS fusion last April. I rented a hospital bed for the downstairs and got onto Amazon and bought a kneeling scooter. BEST PURCHASE EVER. I live alone and I could get up and kneel on it and GO!! I could get to my powder room but kind of washed up at my kitchen sink.

TWO FULL MONTHS NONWEIGHT BEARING!!! Horrible! I played lots of golf and walked lots, and I'm still in pain!!

I'd love to know when this will end or maybe it won't. Yes, I can it together so I hired a handyman!! walk, but my foot and ankle hurt. So, I switched doctors and now have new $450.00 orthotics! But my foot burns and hurts.

I wish you luck and get the scooter...they are great!!!

WheelchairS don't fit everywhere. Get overnight delivery. Had trouble getting it put together, called a handyman.

    Good luck!!

I had a midfoot fusion on my left foot in Feb 2014 when I was in my mid 50s. It took much longer than I had expected to heal. I was not prepared for how much it took out of me emotionally. I was a very athletic individual running regularly and enjoyed hiking. The pain and swelling in my foot was becoming unbearable and difficult to do normal things. I jumped at a chance to do the surgery when all else had failed and had a bunionectomy at the same time. The surgeon used the bone from that part to help fuse my tarsal joint. My surgeon had said that I definitely required the operation as my osteoarthritis was advance.

I did all the physiotherapy that I was suppose to do and continue to do them. For nearly a year I was wearing trainers in the office. I suffered some complications with the surgery. I had temporary nerve damage and permanent drop toe syndrome (I think the surgeon nicked a tendon). Also my bunionectomy never really healed well.

5 years on I am back to running, but not the same distances, and I only run every other day. I can run a slow 10k. I can hike 10 miles. I am training to do a 3 week backpacking trek in the Pyrenees this summer. However, after my first day of backpacking training in which I did a 10 mile trek, my foot was in pain. I iced it (Icing is my first resort when my foot is in pain). I am going to try it again tomorrow, and try to put in regular backpack-hiking training regimes. I know not to overdue it. But I am concern that I might not be able to carry a loaded pack for 3 weeks hiking with multiple elevation changes.

The answer to your question is, no you won't ever be the same afterwards. However, with good physiotherapy and possibly wearing orthodics and gradually building up your strength you will be able to do most things. Also, I am not in pain. Sometimes I suffer discomfort, that's when icing helps. Your foot gets used to the icing, and it is no longer painful to ice it. 20 minutes ice water actually feels great. I might be considered a success story, as I am running and go to the gym. Though I don't feel like one.

I'd like to also know if people are back to having a normal active sporty life after this surgery. I can find nothing on line about it.

      Hello everyone,

So these are my really ugly feet which I apologize for making the picture so big. The left foot is my issue. 2 years ago, August 2017 I had the mid foot fusion with removal of arthritis as well. Still on a knee walker at Christmas. Finally was able to just use a boot, but in May 2018 my doctor said she could not help anymore. No PT or future surgery. The pins holding the two bones together on the top of my foot broke, so hardware is still in my foot. I went to two other doctors and one suggested removing the hardware, no problem. The other doctor said I might be in worse pain than before because cutting into the foot a second time could damage a nerve.

Finally started walking again after all that and then just this month had to get a job where I'm on my feet 6-8 hours per day to help pay bills and college for my daughters. Very tough and trying to work through it, but the pain is awful at night. I know it's hard to tell, but my left foot is swollen and that inside arch, what a bear. Wearing Dansko or Hoka One Ones and definitely support hose. Those are lovely in 95 degree weather. Anyway, I am so sympathetic to everyone out there dealing with these issues. Can't go back, but I never thought I would be in this position with my feet. Good luck to you all!

I recently had a mid foot fusion on my foot on a Friday and was back to work the following Wednesday! As a matter of fact I attended my sons 9am basketball game the day after surgery! We bought an iwalk 2.0 and it was a lifesaver! Waaaay better than crutches and you can be hands free!

I had a mid foot fusion approx 4 years ago. Instead of crutches i opted for a knee stroller. I was able to take walks and get around the house easier. Highly recommend. Take care, you will get through this.

    Hi Michelle and all.

new to this site and glad i have found it. i had triple ankle fusion in october 2018 following football injury many years ago. since the op i have been in agony. i have nerve pain at the top of my foot. the pain from the metal work is unbearable sometimes and now i have an issue with my big toe in that i have my big toe bending inwards, i have limited movement on it and its so painful when i walk.

interested to note from others if they have had similar issues and also if they benefited from hardware removal. i have had to go private for secondary opinions and am having to take 15 plus tablets per day to deal with the pain am in.

Hi, I had my midfoot fusion surgery about 5 weeks ago now and I still can't put any weight on that foot. I get around on a scooter in the house and when I have to go to the Dr. If you don't have steps you have to get down, this is my challenge, you could probably along on the scooter when your husband goes walking. He will just have to walk at a slow pace for you to be able to walk along.

Hi, I also had total mid foot fusions and bunionectomy 8 weeks ago. Yes, it is very frustrating! Post how you are doing. I just started physical therapy after getting a CAM boot on Dec. 6. I'm almost completely weight bearing now, using only a cane. It's been a real journey!
