Mid foot fusion.

Hiya. I had a mid foot fusion 2 weeks ago now. I am really struggling with non weight bearing. Has anyone else dealt with this please. I am crying with frustration. My husband and I are very keen walkers and it is really hard not being able to get out and about under my own steam.

look forward to hearing your tips.

Hello everyone! I had a midfoot fusion on September 21, 2016 with a heel bone graft and an Achilles tendon lengthening surgery. I am 48 and was born with flat feet. In 1982 I had foot surgery to create an arch in both feet. They quit doing the surgery not long after I had mine because they found it caused arthritis. I have also had two bunionectomies. Fast forward to the past several years where I began to have to curtail walking and standing for very long due to severe pain. This year it got to the point that the pain was unbearable and required me to sit more and more. I finally went to the doctor and discovered severe arthritis. Right worse than left. I decided to have the fusion done. Oddly, the fusion itself did not hurt but the graft and tendon surgery incisions were very painful. I was in a splint for 2 weeks and then got my sutures removed. I got a bed sore on my heel towards the inside of my heel. I had the bone graft on the outside portion of the heel. I was in a cast for 6 weeks. Then in a walking boot for 4 weeks. I bought a knee scooter and it was the best thing I ever did!! I highly recommend getting one! I do have pain with walking or standing too much and wearing certain types of shoes. I still have swelling but it gets better all the time. My question is this . . . if anyone has had a bone graft from their heel, how long did it take for that pain to subside? It isn't unbearable but I just don't understand why it sometimes bothers me more than my actual fusion did. Curious. Thank you for your sharing!

I've been reading your experiences. I'm 28 and have flat feet with pain that had started radiating to my shins, knees, and back. I myself am 6 six weeks out of my procedure this upcoming Wednesday. I had an Evans osteotomy, bunionectomy, 2 hammer toe corrections, and Achilles lengthening. The pain has finally become tolerable, without the blood rush making my foot feel as if it were about to explode. The emotional part has been excruciating. I'm in the military part time and usually pretty active in my personal life as well. I haven't been comfortable working out so I hope to start back after my boot. I'm huge into cycling, but I'm sure it will be some time before I can resume that. It's tough not being able to do for myself exclusively.

I have crutches and a knee scooter. I'm fortunate to have them both because they are a benefit at different times.

Support is very important but it still doesn't seem to alleviate the depression for me. I'm ready to start back driving !

Hi, just wondering how your leg is after the Achilles lengthing I had my done nov 16 and one leg now seems longer than the other and can seem to get the power back n my leg? Despite lots of physio, what has been  the benefit of this op for you?, as I can feel the pulling on my other hip and feel I need that doing also, but the recovery has been so long the thought of it fills me with dread.

Hi I had mid foot fusion on the 1st Feb 2016 I am still  in  pain and cannot walk without a stick , i have pain when walking down hill or inclines , I have not worked since that day and it looks like my company are now in a position to retire me as i cannot do my job. Before the operation i was able to walk normally only getting pain after long walks, now i'm left with a limp. If i could turn back the clock i would cancel the whole operation. I really  thought  it would improve my walking for longer but it has'nt. There is'nt a day go's by i wish i had never  had it done and just lived with the flat foot or maybe just have had the joint cleared of any arthritis

Did anyone on this thread have surgery for flat feet and arthritis which made it worse. My surgery should be correction planovalgus with hindfoot midfoot  fusion, calcaneal osteotomy, ankle ligament reconstruction, possible midfoot osteotomy, ankle arthroscopy, posterior release.  Has anyone had anything like this for flat feet severe pronation and arthritis????  I am desperate to talk to someone who has had extensive surgery like I am supposed to have and is in the 45-65 age range.

sounds like you had the same operation i had to rectify a flat foot , and to your question on how far could i walk before the operation.. alot further than i can now .1 picture shows a before and after surgery

The surgeon I saw said if you can walk (for example) 2 miles and then you get pain then walk 1 mile and dont get surgery.  But in my case I cannot walk a block even and can only wear gym shoes cause my foot pronates so severely and the toes and front foot are like a duck.

Whatever you do, don't put any weight on your foot.  Stop and think.  Those bones are very tiny and any amount of weight could negate the fusion.  I had 6 fusions almost a year ago and I still have bones that haven't unioned.  Many factors will affect the healing process, mine being age.  I played golf almost everyday with my husband and haven't played one round in 8 months. It's hell to be sidelined.

i am 10 months out of surgery.  i still have pain on top of foot and swelling is so bad i have to wear a bigger shoe.  i had my foot injured at work almost 2 years ago, i fear i will never be without pain, have not been back to work since december 2015, i can only walk a small amount and standing over 2 minutes hurts.  will i ever be better?  the dr. says its a wait and see.

I know how you feel with the pain especially going down inclines because I have trouble moving my foot up and down. you say you had a accident which meant you had to have surgery to try and walk , mine was an option to rectify a flat foot believing it would take away the pain when walking distances, when I was sat or not working I hardly felt a thing in my foot before the surgery , not so now I feel pain constantly . If had a choice now I'd decline it and live with the flat foot.

Is it classed as borderline depression when every day you regret having any operation ,cos thats what i do every day ,, what if i hadnt done  this , what if i hadnt done that etc what could i be doing now ? I deffinitly know i'd be happier
