Migraine associated vertigo and Menieres

Hi. I hope you  are all enjoying your Sunday.  I wonder if any of you with MD also suffer with MAV or indeed were misdiagnosed between the two at some stage?    When I read your posts regarding symptoms, although I have been diagnosed with MAV and have all of the MAV symptoms, they seem very similar if not identical to those of you living with MD. I have been signed off by the ENT  my GP has referred me for a hearing test because of the tinnitus, sometime difficulty hearing low register sounds and voices, and the sometimes painfully acute awareness of every noise around me.   I Understand that the symptoms could be still MAV but wonder if anyone has experience of both conditions?  Thank you in advance 😊

    Dear Amber,

I was diagnosed with MD a few years ago.  I’ve found enormous relief from the vertigo with intratympanic steroid injections.  Additionally, these injections have resulted in an improvement in my hearing and tinnitus.    But recently, I’ve been experiencing was I was calling a “Chronic Meniere’s Hangover”.  I haven’t been experiencing vertigo, but rather a low level dizziness, nausea, and lightheadedness associated with head movement, walking, and worse on climbing stairs,  The fatigue has been enormous as well.  The only relief I get is when I sit or lie down and keep my head still.  (Not much of a life!)

My doctor explained that Migraine occupies a huge spectrum.  He said that I have Vestibular Migraine/MAV, which can often be seen in addition to MD.  Typically with Vestibular Migraine, there’s something causing a reduced migraine threshold:  Perhaps birth control pills, HRT, certain medications, or any number of food items.  In my particular case, I’d been trying to reduce my daily Klonopin dose, and I tapered much too fast.  Apparently, this lowered this my threshold and allowed this MAV to emerge.

So yes, I have experienced both.

I hope you feel better soon!

    Sincerely,

    J-

Thanks J.  Chronic hangover is how I describe it and, as with your meds, mine worsens when I reduce the prochloperazine.  I’ve had migraine aura since childhood and the odd migraine lthough not debilitating, and even now rarely have the headache but the vertigo, fatigue, vision and hearing disturbances and feeling of moonwalking are the most promenant symptoms. GP is to try me on beta blockers as can’t see what’s triggering the symptoms but also suspects Menieres - I’m just not sure it’s easy even for the specialists to tell the difference and I’m not sure a hearing test will be conclusive but i guess we will see!  Thanks for yor reply.
