Migraine aura

I had another migraine aura on Saturday. It was a great day, until it wasn't. It started out of nowhere and lasted about 20 minutes. The weird part was that an hour or so later, it happened again. I've never had two in the same day. My first aura happened when I was 43 in October, 2018. It was so scary as I had never heard of an aura before that day. I was at work and was taken to the ER. I had another one three days later and then two days after that for a total of three. Then, I was good for over a year and had another on New Year's Day 2019. Then, I was good until the other day.

I have crippling anxiety because of them. I find them so scary. I just don't know how to cope. Any one have any words of wisdom or encouragement? I should also mention that I have seen a neurologist and had scans (CT, MRI, MRA). All was fine and was told, "I see lots of women for the first time at your age."

    hello staci

like you i had a migraine aura years ago then never had one again until menopause. i get them now out the blue and can have two in one day also.

i find them scary and they put me on edge for the rest of the day , they make me feel nauseas and unsteady.

try not to worry yourself, iv read a lot about them and some people are having them daily and can't get on with their normal day and have been having them for years.

although i suffer a lot with headaches the migraine auras come on their own and i don't get a headache after them.

for me i think its to do with hormonal changes and stress and like you anxiety .

try not to let them scare you x

Thank you so much for replying. Honestly, they have ruined my life. After my first one, I have been a paranoid mess. I am constantly on edge waiting for the next one to happen. I didn't even know they existed 3 years ago, now I spend every day all day thinking about them.

The minute something seems odd in my vision, I instantly panic. And, ever since the first one, there is always something odd in my vision....every day!

I don't get the headache either and there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason as to why they occur. It could be hormones as I am definitely perimenopausal. I just never had two in one day before and that scared me.

I live alone and my only relative lives in a different state, so I am extra afraid when it happens. Thanks for being kind. xo

I have suffered from these for many years and I wish I could say it gets easier but I totally understand your fear. I have suffered with migraines for nearly 40 years and I am now 53.

Mine are hormonal and have become more aura based as I have reached peri menopause. I still have regular periods and the auras start 1/2 days before out of nowhere like yours. I can get them for days on end multiple times and then they leave for weeks or months on end.

The best tip I can give you is as soon as you see the little flicker in your vision is drink a can of full fat coke with a 300mg dispersible aspirin dissolved in it. This will help to abort the attack. Try not to take triptans as they can cause the aura to prolong. I have tried so much over the years and am still on daily preventatives but not sure how much they help any longer.

I have been in ER (A&E over here) many times and seen the stroke team and had many scans and tests. I understand your worries completely. It just helps to know others are out there who can relate to you as luckily most people with migraines do not have the aura.

    Take care x

Thank you so much for your reply. I am so sorry you are dealing with migraines. It's awful. I started getting menstrual migraines about 9 years ago. The auras are relatively new to me. Why do they have to be so scary!?! I get severe pain with the menstrual migraines, but no pain with the auras. I can't find any rhyme or reason.

Thank you for easing my anxiety. xo

    Hi Staci

I started having these aura migraine when I was about 42. I was also shocked 1st time as I was driving and had the kids in the car. I still have them time to time. Also a friend, same age. Dr. sad not to worry and to be honest I just ignore them. It is true that it happens not so often. Anyway, you are not alone. My advise would be stay calm and relax. You are OK.

      Hi Alice,

Oh, gosh. In the car with kids? I would have lost my mind. Thank you so much for easing my fears. I wish it never happened to me. It has completely taken over my life. I find them so frightening, that every little weird thing in my vision sends me into an instant panic. It's a terrible way to travel through life.

      Thanks friend. xo
