Migraine first time age 63.

Never had many headaches never mind a migraine. I'm 63yrs old. Had a visual episode 6 weeks ago saw zigzags and blurred vision on my right, left side normal it only lasted about 10 minutes. A week later I woke up feeling like Id got flu. Its lasted 5 weeks. Ive had 2 horrendous episodes of ringing, buzzing, fizzing, dizzyness with my ears and head feeling blocked. Both lasted 3 hours. Ive had all tests for a TIA and nothing found. Been given lots of medication for sinuses, vertigo, migraine, prevention of a stroke and I'm feeling nobody has a clue whats going on with me and I'm trying to work it out myself. I had another episode last night starting with ringing and buzzing so I took the Sumatriptan and it worked after an hour. Has anyone else had migraine start in later life ? Doctors tell me its rare. Should I ask to see a neurologist or another specialist? I'm getting worried. I've had 8 weeks of feeling unwell with no answers so I don't know what I'm dealing with. Thanks for any help.

    Hello there,

I am 64 years old. Throughout my life I would get the occasional headache but never a migraine.

About 6-7 years ago I started getting ocular migraines. There was no headache involved after the ocular business These happen in spring and fall. Usually April/May and then in Sept/October.

Also around the sames time, I started to get an awful pressure thing in my fave and forehead.

It starts off with a quick dizzy spell. Then my face fills with pressure. My left ear plugs and my balance is all off. Kind feel like I am walking on a boat. I have to hold my nose and blow to unplug ear.

This is a daily thing. usually starting around 3 pm. Sometimes all day. I get around 3 days per month where I do not experience it.I am so sick and tired of it as it causes anxiety.

3 ENT's and 2 neurologists and they have been no help. All they want is to put me on daily migraine med.

They suggest it might be daily silent migraines but have no clue.

Thankyou for your response, its not just me then.I keep being told that it's unlikely to develop migraine at my age so the doctors are not investigating that possibility, meanwhile I'm feeling rubbish. I've only had the visual thing once up to now. We just have to keep going.

Is it something with the pressure changes in spring and fall? Allergies? Vertigo? Just trying to provide some ideas. I have allergies, deal with vertigo and have pretty well managed chronic daily migraine so the ideas aren't entirely baseless. 😃

Yes hay fever is one of the possibilities, I'm currently taking antihistamines just in case. Ive had hay fever every march and october for many years but never in july/August but the weather has been so weird this year (in the UK) so its worth trying. Thanks

      Hey

It does seem odd that my ocular events are spring and summer.. I have had allergy testing and all was good.....

Something else I get in spring and summer is BPPV. That is just nasty until I can have the correct maneuver to get the crystals to go back into place.

      Appreciate you help!!!!!

I have BPPV too. That is what I meant by vestibular issues but I couldn't recall the name of it. I will sometimes get a flare when I get a migraine. The provider who diagnosed and treated me a few times taught me how to do the maneuver at home and it has worked great! Maybe you could learn to do it at home so you don't have to wait to get relief?

I really hope you can get some relief from the ocular migraines. One day at a time!!

      Hello there,

Thanks for your reply.Isn't it awful having both ocular craziness and bppv?

As mentioned mine are seasonal. This is the week that my bppv rears its ugly head. I looked up when I had it in previous years, and it was this week each year. I am actually starting this week to feel kinda weird sensations, and am just holding my breath hoping it does not start.

I am kind afraid to do the maneuvers myself. It was explained to me that that the testing needs to be done in order to see which canal has been affected. hence the proper type of maneuver is done. There are different maneuvers done based on which way the eyes moves. I would hate to do the wrong maneuver and makes things worst.

Hi Sue I suffered from migraines from age 14 with visual disturbances and paralysis down one side. After having them for years and nightly while pregnant with my second child I had enough and went to a migraine seminar where chiropractors talked about migraine/neck connection. I went to see a chiro straight away and he saved my life. I was migraine free for over 10 years and my neck got bad again and I had another one. I went to the chiro and he said he was surprised that I wasnt getting more migraines as my neck was so bad. I know mine started when I was young and not late in life but I have always had neck problems. Headaches and tinnitus can also be caused by a misaligned neck. It cant hurt to check it out. You never know it may just work. I hope you find some relief soon. Take care

I had my first migraine with aura at 43. However, I did have menstrual migraines for 7-8 years prior without aura.

hi Leigh, thanks for your message.

I found a picture of the visual aura I saw and my GP confirmed it to be a migraine aura. I am now well and havent had any further vertigo or migraine. My GP said lets hope its a one off but still expects me to inform my car and travel insurance that I have had a possible TIA.All tests for TIA are now completed and found nothing. I have come across several people all over 60 who have had a similar experience, it seems here in the UK that it is assumed more likely to be a TIA if there is no previous history of migraine. I will inform my insurance but I will be saying TIA is possible but so is migraine as thats what the consultant from the stroke team said in his letter to me. In the meantime I have meds for migraine my GP prescribed and I will keep my fingers crossed it will all be well. I intend to enjoy my life !
