Migraine/menopause

I'm suffering with aura migraines very frequently and they really are getting me down. My Doctor just dishes out pills. I would like to ask for an MRI just to rule out any thing serious which is in back of my mind. I believe mine could be due to menopause as i get warm just before a migraine. My blood pressure has been. I thought about hrt to calm down the flushes but then heard the migraines can get worse. Anyone else been referred for mri or specialist? Anyone took hrt or alternative thats worked? Thanks

Hi Louise, if you go onto some menopause forums on here, you will find that MANY women suffer from worsening migraines and headaches. I am one of those people, at age 41 I started getting chronic headaches - every day! It has been a nightmare, my periods have been erratic and I have had some hot sweats, but my main symptoms have been light headedness, head pain, jaw pain, eye pain, neck pain, dizziness, blurry vision and more recently I have struggled with knee and joint pain and burning skin in patches. Do not underestimate the power of hormones, or lack of hormones in your body! I have been through so much testing, MRI's, CT's, dental exams, eye exams, neurologist tests, gynaecological tests, full bloods, auto immune testing, xrays and nothing much has been found! It might pay to go to a neurologist if you have had migraines for a while and they have recently changed in some way, they can order an MRI, which is generally the best testing method to eliminate other things. All the best.

Hi Louise, I had my first migraine aura at 43. I am definitely in perimenopause. I have had a CT, MRI, and MRA. All my tests were clear. My neurologist said he sees, "Many women my age for the first time."

I don't take HRT because I was told it is contradicted for migraine aura. My personally research has revealed that estrogen dominance is likely the cause and not low estrogen. Estrogen is a neuro-stimulant and auras are caused by over excited neurons. xo
