Migraines everyday, all day, for 9 months. Help!!

Remember your worst migraine. How much pain you were in and how you just couldn't do anything. That's how I am everyday.
Right so I'm a 20 year old female, I'm and student and work as a waitress part time.
So, I started with a headache on the 18th January this year, pain killers didn't touch it. Woke up the next day and still had a terrible headache.
I have a terrible headache all day, everyday, without fail. It's got to the point now that I'm stressed; fed up, hardly sleeping, can't concentrate at uni or any time really.
Please understand that the pain never goes, the headache never ends. I have literally had a migraine 24/7 for 9 months now.
I wear glasses (short sighted) but I know it's not my eyes causing the migraines.
I've cut out everything that's apparently supposed to aggravate headaches. Stop drinking caffeine, stop eating chocolate and cheese. No change in the headaches.
This continued for a week or two before I went to see my GP who referred me to a neurologist.
The first neurologist thought I had tension headaches caused by stress.
At this point, I wasn't stressed at all, not with uni or work, nothing. So I didn't quite understand this diagnosis.
Anyway he put me onto tablets called amitriptyline, which is an antidepressant, and told me to gradually increase my dosage up to 50mg a day. This didn't help at all, had horrible side affects.
I then saw another neurologist who diagnosed me with migraines, put me into Topamax, which are an anti epileptic drug meant to also treat migraines. I got my dose up to 100mg within 3 months and the side affects were horrible and didn't help at all.
I've had a CT scan, which was normal. Had an MRI scan, which was normal. I've also tried Imigran and some migraine medication that melts into your tongue, with no affect what so ever.
After trying all this, an idea was put forward that I could have raised intracranial hypertension, so yesterday I had a Lumbar Puncture. The pressure was at 19 and a half (apparently if its over 20 it's high), so it's not thought its that. The migraines were worse for a week after the lumbar puncture, I couldn't even sit up without being in agony and being sick. Spent a week in bed unable to move.
I've got another type of MRI scan booked for the end of this month that's apparently going to look at the veins/blood vessels in my head to see if there is a problem there.
I feel like I'm not being taken seriously now by doctors, because "there isn't anything to be worried about, like a tumour" as I'm always told! As much as I'm so very glad I don't have anything serious to be worried about, I hate spending everyday in so much pain that I can't function.
Please don't think I'm over reacting/attention seeking/whatever, but I am literally fed up and can't cope. I can't get a minute of relief, I'm constantly in pain (different variations of pain, but pain all the same). As I'm writing this I'm crying my eyes out because I haven't managed to sleep more than 3 hours a night in that past 4 days. I'm exhausted and depressed now. I've even told my GP that I am so depressed now, I have thought on more than one occasion of overdosing just to end this pain. And he literally turned me away saying he couldn't do anything. I feel so defeated.
If anyone has had this type of problem before or knows someone that has, please let me know.

I have not read through all of the replies to see if anyone else mentioned this, but I had horrendous migraines following a head injury. My doctor tried me on topamax and I hated it, too. The only two things that helped me were Zonegran (anti-seizure medication) and Imitrex (Sumatriptan). Best of luck, hun. I know that must be absolutely horrible. You may want to try some peppermint essential oil. It won't make it go away but it might dull it slightly.

I see the new neurologist at Tufts Medical Center at the end of September. It's a long month away but at least I know I have something to be hopeful for.

Im 18, and have had migraines every day for over a year now, every single day, as bad as it can get. I have tried amitryptiliine, propranolol, candersarten, topiramate (never again!), pregabalin, two lots of botox, and countless triptans.
I really empathise with your situation, it is impossible to maintain a happy, independent life with the constant pain, nausea and restrictions on daily activity. My current neurologist recognises that at the moment it is getting worse rather than better, so I often feel quite hopeless.
partly I just wanted to post to say to everyone that there is someone else out here who gets it, and thats why I needed to hear from you as well. It would be great to hear from you how its going, if only so I dont feel like Im sending this out into a silent impersonal nethersphere of technology.
love and support to anyone who might find this message, even if noone replies

This is exactly what this website is for to support each other and say that we are all in the same boat one way or another.
It might be something you have already done, and appologies for stating the obvious, but are you seeing a Neurologist? So as to have all the necessary scans etc to rule out anything that shouldnt be happening.
I agree about the Topirimate, it nearly drove me to suicide!
I have Hemapelgic migraine which mimics a stroke and cluster headache too. At least the clusters are relatively under control with Pregabalin 300mg twice a day and Veramil 240mg 3 thimes a day, but still get admitted to hospital about once a month.
Like you say, no fun, no liife and its crazy!
Keep in touch Heather, support is free and can possibly stop you going insane.
Take care

Also alot of people use their cpap machines (oxygen) to get rid of headaches.
It does not stop the source of the headache but might give some relief. Might try it in the dr's office and if it helps get the dr to prescribe oxygen

I feel for you! I had this for 4 months straight. Your experience sounds crushing. But It CAN and should get better. I was diagnosed with Chronic Cluster type migraine during that time, FYI.
Try injectable Imitrex (used most when I had that 4 month bout every day similar to what you describe) IF you can safely take that. When nothing works at all it is sometimes the only thing that does. Chronic Cluster Migraineurs say don't waste time with Triptan pills during these episodes as nothing will likely work. The injections are quite expensive (even with insurance) and the springload injector isn't pleasant but your pain might really be better. I'd gladly pay twice the price during those times! The spot on your outer thigh between muscles is by far most comfortable and freeze the site for a minute or two. I learned this from other migraineurs.
Don't give up it WILL get better. Keep at your doctors and try more treatments including getting approved for Botox for Migraine. Again, not fun (37 shots scalp anbbut after 3 treatments I have seen some relief and many others do too.
How long were you on Topomax? Nortriptalyne has a better side effect profile than Amitriptalyne. Has anyone suggested Verapramil? Given what you are dealing with I think it sounds as if you may trule have to find a prophylactic or combo of them to deal with this. A lot of us do. You are not alone at all.
The last thing you probably feel like is exercise but if you can do cardio or even long walks or swimming very regularly, you may start to see real relief. The data is better than many pills over time. Also, the more pills the more Rebound headaches which are proven to feed the cycle you are in and even create a Chronic situation.
There's a clinical trial of a treatment which holds great promise called Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide. You sound like you might be a candidate so check if possible.
Have you tried Fiorinal with codeine and-as one poster mentioned, an anti-anxiety drug (clonazapam may be safer and is long acting but there are many other choices)? Many migraineurs find an assist from such meds in combination with an overall approach.
I'll be praying for and thiking of you. I hope you have and get much support as you deserve it.

I came across your letter and just felt the need to reply. Have you had any success yet with any treatments?
I also suffered from heavy migraines for about 8 years. It is something you can not really explain to anyone if you do not get it yourself. After seeing many doctors that only referred me to the next with more medication that just damaged my body further, I came across a nutritionist. She put me on a full body detox for 30 days, cleansing my liver etc. Also I could not take in any sugar, gluten or cow's milk during that time and had to change my eating habits completely. Supplements were also added. Within 2 weeks, my migraines were completely gone. My body started healing itself, due to it functioning better.
It just totally changed my mindset regarding medication. I was also at my wits end and nobody could help me and now I am painfree and healthy.
I really hope this helps and it's worth giving it a go if you maybe haven't gone down that route...

I decided to come off all medication - the latest was nortriptaline (similar to amitryptiline). I take zolmitriplan when I migraine starts which generally works. I have gone from chronic migraines 4-5 times a week to fewer recently. I bought a titanium double magnetic bracelet which I am certain has really helped the amount and intensity of my migraines. There is also a device which I'm thinking about getting should things change. The article my mum found is

I feel much better coming off the medication and to be honest there is no point if you're still suffering. My consultant wrote to my doctor saying he was delighted I am only having 2-3 migraines a week - at that point I have to question if he has ever suffered a migraine. Wishing you all the best.

Hope your still showing an improvement?
I know how you feel about coming off the medication, I used to feel like a zombie on te majority of tablets I was put on.
Have you tried blood pressure tablets?
What has given me the most success is that I've been put on blood pressure tablets by a migraine specialist- not actually sure why I needed them, my blood pressure has always been normal, but he said they help, and they have! I'm on 4mg of Candesartan daily.
Now I usually just have a small niggling headache around my eyes everyday instead of a full blown migraine, and the amount of times I have an actual migraine has reduced massively. Sometimes I go a full week without one!
I hope you find something that can help you! But ask your doctor about trying blood pressure tablets.
All the best, let me know how you get on! xx

I completely understand how you feel! I hope you find something soon that helps, but try and avoid the amitiptyline and medications like it- they can be highly addictive and have horrible side affects. I used to be like a zombie on that stuff, always sleepy and felt sick all the time.
I've had some success in helping my migraines but it hasn't fully got rid of them, but myself and my life have improved so much.
Try your best to cut out painkillers! Paracetamol, cocodomol etc cause rebound headaches! I know that sounds hard when your in a lot of pain, but it will really benefit you.
When I've got a migraine I take Rizatripton tablets and I find these really help.

I'd definitely avoid antidepressants though, horrible stuff that always gave me the worst side affects ever!
