Migraines everyday, all day, for 9 months. Help!!

Remember your worst migraine. How much pain you were in and how you just couldn't do anything. That's how I am everyday.

Right so I'm a 20 year old female, I'm and student and work as a waitress part time.

So, I started with a headache on the 18th January this year, pain killers didn't touch it. Woke up the next day and still had a terrible headache.

I have a terrible headache all day, everyday, without fail. It's got to the point now that I'm stressed; fed up, hardly sleeping, can't concentrate at uni or any time really.

Please understand that the pain never goes, the headache never ends. I have literally had a migraine 24/7 for 9 months now.

I wear glasses (short sighted) but I know it's not my eyes causing the migraines.

I've cut out everything that's apparently supposed to aggravate headaches. Stop drinking caffeine, stop eating chocolate and cheese. No change in the headaches.

This continued for a week or two before I went to see my GP who referred me to a neurologist.

The first neurologist thought I had tension headaches caused by stress.

At this point, I wasn't stressed at all, not with uni or work, nothing. So I didn't quite understand this diagnosis.

Anyway he put me onto tablets called amitriptyline, which is an antidepressant, and told me to gradually increase my dosage up to 50mg a day. This didn't help at all, had horrible side affects.

I then saw another neurologist who diagnosed me with migraines, put me into Topamax, which are an anti epileptic drug meant to also treat migraines. I got my dose up to 100mg within 3 months and the side affects were horrible and didn't help at all.

I've had a CT scan, which was normal. Had an MRI scan, which was normal. I've also tried Imigran and some migraine medication that melts into your tongue, with no affect what so ever.

After trying all this, an idea was put forward that I could have raised intracranial hypertension, so yesterday I had a Lumbar Puncture. The pressure was at 19 and a half (apparently if its over 20 it's high), so it's not thought its that. The migraines were worse for a week after the lumbar puncture, I couldn't even sit up without being in agony and being sick. Spent a week in bed unable to move.

I've got another type of MRI scan booked for the end of this month that's apparently going to look at the veins/blood vessels in my head to see if there is a problem there.

I feel like I'm not being taken seriously now by doctors, because "there isn't anything to be worried about, like a tumour" as I'm always told! As much as I'm so very glad I don't have anything serious to be worried about, I hate spending everyday in so much pain that I can't function.

Please don't think I'm over reacting/attention seeking/whatever, but I am literally fed up and can't cope. I can't get a minute of relief, I'm constantly in pain (different variations of pain, but pain all the same). As I'm writing this I'm crying my eyes out because I haven't managed to sleep more than 3 hours a night in that past 4 days. I'm exhausted and depressed now. I've even told my GP that I am so depressed now, I have thought on more than one occasion of overdosing just to end this pain. And he literally turned me away saying he couldn't do anything. I feel so defeated.

If anyone has had this type of problem before or knows someone that has, please let me know.

My wife has been a migraine sufferer since childhood. Only in the past year or so have they gotten to where she had 4 to 7 migraine days per week. Her neurologist had exhausted the migraine medications looking for one that will work and had now put her on ambien (sleep aid) to see if getting her back on a regular sleep schedule will help. Too early to tell if it's helping yet, especially since the ambien doesn't always help her sleep through the pain. When she was younger and had only occasional migraines, she would get 2 to 3 day migraines with her menstrual cycle. Now that she is nearing 50 I'm wondering if this almost constant migraine is all hormonal, with pending menopause around the corner. At her next regular doctor visit, I'm going to suggest checking her hormone levels. This may not be the answer for her or anyone else but I think it is worth checking. Everyone has hormones, including men. I think a hormonal imbalance could cause all kinds of problems, including migraines. I'll check back in if we learn anything with either the sleep therapy or the hormone check.

It has really taken over my life and I'm to the point of giving up I've tried everything and so far the only thing that helps me is meditating music vicks rub on my head and an ice pack so you could give that a try i would like to know if they ever fomd anything out I wish the best for you I know how you feel stay strong

Hi all on this site : Thanks for sharing helpful hints. It is discouraging that there are so many people with these problems not getting any results from the drugs or other remedies. My daily diary has given me some clues that I can pass along. I too have a baseline headache of level 3 that never goes away, and a daily spike up to level 7 to 9 that comes in just before or after dinner that lasts most of the night. These are classified as migraines by 2 neurologists. My known triggers are : gluten, alcohol, asparagus, bright lights, looking at a computer screen ,smells like smoke or perfume, and neck position with any chin forward position, and the slightest weight on my head.

Since some of the underlying cause of my headache is cervicogenic, originating in the neck, physio treatment with neck traction stretching and movement is helpful. I'm also just 2 treatments into Prolotherapy injections in the neck-too soon to comment on this, but prolotherapy has been a lifesaver for my lower back problems.

I believe that drugs are only a bandaid, or temporary solution, but have agreed to try anything to see if it will work. After 10 months of trials with non-effective drugs, I'm now on Nortriptyline, the migraine med of choice. This has shown some promise after a month, but I can't ramp up to the usual recommended dose without serious problems, so I'm remaining at a low dose of 20mg per day. This drug causes rapid heartbeat and keeps me awake, so I switched from taking it in evenings to mornings. At least this way I can sleep.

I'm astounded at doctors prescribing drugs without trying to find and correct the real problem. If you hurt, it's not because your body is deficient in drug " x", it's because there is a physical injury or problem. Find it and fix it ! This is entirely in the patient's hands to find it and fix it. I have another MRI coming up, and you can bet I'll be looking hard at the CD images myself because radiologists often miss something in their report. I have a lesion or growth at the base of my skull that was missed by radiologists on an MRI 7 years ago. It is still there on the latest MRI, recognized this time by a different radiologist, and has not grown larger. Good thing- removing it from that location is extremely risky, and there is no proof it is the cause of my headaches, but I'll be pushing for further investigation.

Keep the useful remedies coming- we need to share even the smallest improvements........Jim 03290

Have you had a blood test to see if you have food sensitivities causing migraines. Also try reading Heal Your Headache, then join the closed group to help you navigate through the suggested diet. I've been suffering for 30 years. Trying to wean off Fiorinal which has been my daily go to along with triptans. Preventatives have never worked. Good luck.

Jim 03290 here : After 10 months of horrible headaches with no answers, I got tired of waiting on our medical system and paid the money for a private MRI. Finally, some answers to what is going on. 3 problems, 2 of which are likely fixable. 1 : a 3cm lipoma at base of the skull pressing into the sinus cavity, but not disrupting blood flow to the brain.( Possibly fixable-it can be shrunk, but is not the prime suspect.) . 2 :Multiple disc and boney growths blocking several nerve foramens, pinching the nerves in my neck ( probably not fixable- here come the neurologic special pain killers, on a temporary basis. ).3 : One vertebra out of place pushing into the spinal cord. ( I feel I can remedy this with more prolotherapy shots and exercises to regain the natural curvature the neck is supposed to have. Just a few millimetres of correction will do it. I've already accomplished a similar correction on my lumbar spine via the same technique .).

So, at least now I can see what the problems are and have a plan, will report back in a few months with progress report. There is no substitute for seeing what is really going on instead of relying on guesswork and an endless string of pills.......Jim 03290

I'm in the same boat you are in, I have had a headache just like you since July. Nothing helps me I've been on top max and now I'm on an antidepressant and it does not help. I don't know what to do either.

    Becky,

Ive had the same problem since July 17, 2016.  I've seen multiple drs, neurologist, TMJ, ENT, had two MRIs, CT Scan, xray, etc.

It never goes away and seems to be getting worse honestly.  I dont have any aspect of my life anymore. Mant drs are telling me to stop doing anythign that seems to make the headaches worse.. so no exercising beyond ten minutes, no movies, no video games, no social interactions, no stress... its really debilitating on my entire life.

I go into a Mayo Clinic on Tuesday.  Honestly, I'm extremely doubtful for any answers.  You're not alone though.  If anything changes for you, please share.  One day at a time, right?

      Hi Chelsea,

I wonder if you have tried Botox?  Its a recognised treatment for migraines and I can honestly say its helped me a lot and reduced my migraines and intensity down to nearly nothing.

      Hello,

I have not because all the doctors seem to genuinely shocked that i have not made any progress at all.  The headache is 24/7.  Best way I've seen it described is this:

Chronic and persistent form of headache marked by continuous pain that varies in severity, always occurs on the same side of the face and head, and is superimposed with additional debilitating symptoms on the continuous but fluctuating pain are occasional attacks of more severe pain.

I've had steriod shots already in my face, and it was not a pleasant experience that day or days after.  I'm concerned botox will be pointless from that and noone's certainty of my issue.

      Hi Chelsea,

Well mine were also 24/7 and I tried multiple cranial nerve block injectections, which is a traumatic experience, but it did help.  Then I tried Botox and its transformed my life, as has the use of 300mg Pregabalin twice a day and 240mg Verapamil 3 times a day and 10mg Flunarizine at night.  I have also been offered a procedure called Occipital nerve stimulation, which I am told should eventually do away with all meds!  Just trying to help, I know that everybody is different and react to meds in a different way, what works for one, doesnt mean it will work for others.  But do let me know how you get on.

      Best wishes and take care

Hi Becky  I totally unsterstand my daughter is suffering the same. She started with headache s  feeling weak and sick in June 2016  she was  11 years old. We went to the doctors about 6 times and A&E . They couldn't find anything . We got an appointment in August with a Neurologist and had a MRI scan on her head, that came back  normal. She was then put on Propranolol tablets but still got a headache . It is now March 2017  she has been off school for two weeks feeling sick ,bad headache s and feeling really weak with no energy . She only feels a bit better when her head is on a pillow . We don't know what else to do . Judith 😞

      Hi Judith

My daughter is now 13 and has been suffering migraines/cluster headaches since june last year also. Countless drs, paediatricians, physio, naturopath, headache clinic to no avail. Allergic to triptans which are a migraine preventative but how can you prevent a migraine if it's ongoing? Propanolol was given at the same time as triptans so unsure if daughter reacted to both meds or just to one so stopped propanolol. Neurologist a month ago. An EEG was performed to see whether she would have any type of seizure (my daughter has been wanting to gouge her left eye out with her cluster attacks). I walked out fwwling sick and the EEG came back normal. Everything my daughter has had done has come back normal. Diagnosed my daughter as a chronic migraine sufferer and is now on topiramate which is a nerve blocker. My daughter doesn't feel any better and has reactions to the meds but need to keep trying. Still upping the dose every couple of weeks so she's not at full strength yet, which will be 50mg morning and night (currently at 25mg morning and night), in about 4 weeks. Daughter is now doing her schooling online as she hasn't been able to attend school since august.

I do feel for you and your daughter. You just have to exhaust all avenues. I'm in Australia and have been suggested medications from this forum and have taken it back to my gp to see whether the meds would suit my daughter. I can only share with you my experience with my child as she's close in age to your daughter.

      Please keep us informed.

Wishing you all the very best x

Hi Fraca I hope your daughter is feeling better.  My daughter had a bad spell . The Neurologist changed her tablets but she was still with headaches 8 out 10 in pain. She even started being sick after meals and feeling sick all day with no energy and looked terrible .  Last week my husband had a brain way and we have tried her on a Gluten Free diet within two days she felt a lot better more energy and nearly back her her normal self . She has still got a headacbut it only a 4 to 5  now . And that's without taking painkillers . It  taken since last  June to find something that helps.  Take care  Judith x
