Mild CP symptoms in 5 1/2 year old?

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hello my daughter is 5 1/2 and has tip toe walked 100% of the time since she could walk. AT the 3 years old the doctor said he is not worried and to wait. she has a mild speech impediment and is below the learning milestones at school for her year group. she has already had 4 fillings 18 months ago and is so hyper. Her school highlighted all of this and said we need to watch it carefully. she is now being referred again for speech therapy and an educational pschycologist. I'm really beginning to think this is CP. Has anyone else been in this situation? thankyou.

Hello Liz, I was interested to read your posting.  I really don't think that your daughter has co but I think she might have some other learning disabilities or just be slow.  The most important thing is to get her checked out to evaluate what it is she really needs.  The earlier the Intervention the faster the results.  I had a little grandson who constantly walked around on tiptoe and he just grew out of it so I don't ink this is anything to worry about but for your own peace of mind but to get her checked out as soon as possible.  Please let us know the outcome ...... Good luck.....Muna

The simplest way to find out is to take brain MRI examination for her, and then let a cerebral surgeon tell you from the report. Another method is to see if she had been through situations which can cause CP. Such as deficit of oxygen and blood because of such reasons as cesarean section, premature delivery, prolonged labour, jaundice, etc.

    Hope the information helps.

Hello Iz, I do agree that before you make any decisions you have to do an MRI and then the neurologist will be able to decide what is needed.  Have you done an MRI before?  Without doing any tests you will never know.  Good luck.....muna and please let us know what happens

Dear Liz,  I'm sorry - this is a difficult thing when a parent knows something's not right but unsure of what to do and certain doesn't want "bad news". Her issues could be related or not. (My 7-yr-old was a hot mess of issues and has several diagnoses after a few years of drs, and yes CP is one of them - very mild)

What are "fillings"? Do you mean she's had dental fillings for cavities?

CP wouldn't cause hyperactivity, but could interfere with staying still, and it shouldn't cause cavities. It would affect speech and walking, though. Behavior and toe-walking are also signs of autism, but please tread carefully as I believe that the label is applied too liberally when there are harder-to-find reasons.

It's wonderful that she'll have an evaluation for speech and by an ed. psych. That will tell you so much!  You may also want to see a pediatric neurologist and have MRI to rule out (or find?) CP.

My son had obvious visual issues since one eye frequently turned out. He has food allergies and was slow to walk,  and hard to understand his speech. We thought his visual issues were holding him back physically - he was so clumsy! He was also having some behavior problems in nursery school (only at age 3) and was a real handful at home. I took him to a neurologist since I thought a developmental pediatrician may have seen autism where there is none, and after a year she suggested we "rule out CP", which was actually confirmed. One month later, his endoscopy/biopsy results were back and Coeliac Disease was also confirmed (he had various pain complaints and fatigue for years so I took him to a rheumatologist and she sent us to a GI doc when his bloodwork looked like CD). When he was 5, he had surgery for the "lazy eye" which helped and we tried vision therapy, too. He has no depth perception but he's not falling down every single day like he used to. (He also has eczema so sitting still isn't his best skill yet)

So, some kids are like onions and you have to work hard, maybe over years, to peel back the layers. Just keep going until you get the answers you need!!!  We still may not have them all for my little guy, but we discovered the major ones and he's one of the best readers in his class, he attends fairly well now and is so much happier and better behaved than at age 3 or 4.  (Some of that is maturity, too)

    GL to you!!
