Hi can someone please tell me what the milk diet entails I know I have to do this before surgery but thinking about trying it out. I have been told I meet the criteria for sugery but have to regulate and lower my blood sugars the only way to get it as low as they want is to inject more and more insulin I thought I may try to do milk diet. Insulin makes me gain weight alot easier.

there are many versions of the milk diet and every surgeon/hosp/dietician seems to have there own preference though the aim is always the same - to shrink your liver in readiness for the surgery as this makes the op more straight forward than having to cope with a fatty liver whilst performing laparoscopic surgery - i would check first to ensure that such a diet is suitable if you are diabetic - the milk diet i followed was as follows but the one you may need to do could be different -

    Milk diet - DAILY ALLOWANCES

    2 - 3 pts semi skim milk

1 - 2 low fat, low sugar yogs

    3 - 4 pieces of fruit

    sugar free jelly (optional)

water, tea, coffee, diet drinks, squashes, sweeteners - unlimited

low cal veg soup in moderation

NO ALCOHOL AND ONLY THE FOODS LISTED ABOVE TO BE CONSUMED

The milk diet is where you have no food at all, but drink five pints of milk instead. You need to take a multi vit tablet every day and have one mug of Boveril eah day. However if you have a problem with your blood sugar levels, I would check to see if it is safe for you first.

the versions you and I have quoted are just a couple of the variations which hosps throughout the country ask their patients to follow - it depends on which hosp debbie is under as to which one she will be asked to follow and it could well be neither of the ones we have listed - also,  neither of the milk diets we have quoted might be suitable for her as we have both stated - and neither might be the best for regulating/lowering her blood sugar - to be honest i think debbie would be better consulting her doctor than asking the forum as none of us know her medical history

I totally agree, she should not carry out any severe diets without seeking medical advice.
