Mirena coil & ulcerative colitis - anyone?

Hi guys

Had the mirena coil fitted in May as the pill seemed to make my migraines worse so was told this was not only great for iradicating migraines but for periods too so a bonus in my eyes! My migraines and periods stopped instantly but have come back with a vengeance 😡 I seem to be having constant periods & the migraines have now come back.

Probably not a good idea but just entered it into Google & read some forum sites where it said that the coil can cause uc?!?! I had it fitted in May and symptoms started exactly 2 months later, diagnosed with uc 3 months later.

I just wondering if the extreme bloating, weight gain, mood swings & low self esteem could be related to the coil & not uc?! I can't go to the docs again, I seem to live in that bloody place!

Just wondered if there was anyone out there that could offer any advice please?

Thanks xxx

I don't what it is with Mirena, but doctors seem to want to push this all the time, like it's some miracle! My experience was dreadful, immediate weight gain, skin reactions, headaches, constant bleeding, and the so called simple removal was nowhere near simple, involved two hospital trips and a general anaesthetic. I'd say this was the coil and not UC, whether uc sufferers are more sensitive I don't know, but I hated it and had it removed after 2 months. Maybe there's a commission for doctors because it's certainly not straightforward or side effect free.

Not really advise but just agreeing with what Mummajojo said.My experience with the Mirena coil was awful. Not only was fitting the damn thing overly difficult for the doctor, but once it was in it caused nothing but problems the worse of which was constant thrush. Everytime i went to the doctors they would ask are you using a different soap?, wearing nylon underwear? using a different washing powder?

Each time i would reply no to all "the only thing it could be is the coil"!, reply: "oh i very much doubt that".

After 6 months of permanent thrush my husband and i were sent to a sexually transmitted disease clinic, and were both individually asked about our sex lives etc, thoroughly embarassing!! and unessesary.

I wanted that damn thing out and only by demanding to be sterilised did they remove it , even then i had to have therapy to make sure at the age of 27 and after ONLY 2 kids that it was not something i would regret later. 8 months after fitting it ,and a neat little scar later, it was gone.

The best thing i ever did, A. no worry about getting pregnant again, B. No more constant thrush.C. no more having to go to the doctors for the pill.

I think it is very likely the coil causing your problems.

I hope you get them to take it out....nasty little thing! I have heard lots of people say that this particular coil caused them nothing but problems.

      Hi girls

Thanks so much for your advise. I kept thinking in the back of my mind that it could be the coil but as you've said, the docs can't praise them enough so believed that it was my uc. I've never been this fat, face is swollen & have gained weight everywhere but my diet hasn't changed. Thought again that it was the uc that was causing the swelling. I only went on it because of my monthly migraines when taking the pill & she said the coil is fab for that but when lkg on google earlier it said a side effect was migraines??? I don't know what to try next, had the pill, the implant, now the coil & still suffering with migraines. I know we won't have more babies as not healthy enough to carry atm but find sterilisation too final.
