Mirena IUD to Treat Endometriosis

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with endometriosis more than 2 years ago, had the lesions removed and a mirena was inserted to treat it. I had random spotting with mirena for the first year, with random sharp cramps. A year later I started ovulating and bleeding again, the cramps were so bad, it would radiate to my cervix and vagina. An ultrasound showed the mirena in it's correct position my gyn put me on a low dose of LENEST 20ED alongside the mirena. I have to say this thankfully stopped the bleeding and pain, however, the pain has returned. I'm quite worried about this pain and wondering if it's the mirena IUD that is causing my pain. This pain can last all day and feels like someone is squeezing my insides. My lower abdomen even forms a dip while it does this. Sometimes it is triggered after a bowel movement.

I would like to know if this has happened to anyone else? If so, do you recommend removing the mirena and continue to take the pill back to back? I'm becoming so paranoid and anxious, I am worried about the next episode of pain happening.

I would like to remove it for my piece of mind.

Thanks 😃

Have you talked to your ob/gyn? If you want that coil out, then have it removed.

    Hi Rosie,

I'm very interested/surprised to hear you were given the IUD to treat your endo. For me it was sort of the opposite- my PC doctor removed the IUD while trying to diagnose me. My GYN doctor placed me on birth control pills to treat my endo or prevent it from returning.

I had a great experience with the Mirena prior to its removal with the exception of getting ovarian cysts. Have you had any ultrasounds to check for that? Overall if you are uncomfortable then have it removed. My GYN gave me the Nexplanon implant which he claims is the same as the Mirena just in your arm instead, and I also take bc pills.

    Best of luck!

    Hi Mandy,

I think the reason for getting an IUD was because of the progestin only hormones in it. I've been told that estrogen makes endometriosis grow.

I definitely have an ovarian cyst shown on an UC but it seems to be that type of cyst that comes and goes.

My blood work also shows that I am a but polycystic...could be the mirena. I think I will try and remove it and stick with the pill to see if this bad pain subsides.

    All the best 😃
