Mirtazapine 15mg

Hello,
I did say last time I'd report back about the Trazadone 50mg I had been prescribed, I apologize for not doing so. It's a strange one tbh, not much sedative effect and gave me flu like symptoms most mornings. I stuck with it for 3 months to give it a real chance but it ultimately did nothing. I was getting some sleep but no where near enough and felt it very difficult to get back to sleep afterwards.
But hey, I was sleeping and feeling a little better! Anyone who has read my negative, sleep deprived dismissive comments in the past will know that's a good thing. Sadly it wasn't enough though and after having a bad reaction last Thursday by upping the dose (as advised btw, just 2..) I have stopped taking Trazadone completely. No side effects I may add which I'm surprised about.
So I visit my wonderful GP today (seriously I love this guy compared to the quacks I've saw in the past..) and he agreed that stopping the medication was the correct way to go. We have spoke extensively about no more antidepressants but his hands really are tied with this. But he listens to me, appreciates that I do my own research and is happy for me to suggest certain medications that I think may help me, on a long term basis of course.
Today we discussed Mirtazapine, he advised that it is in the antidepressant family has been commonly prescribed for insomnia in the past in a controlled way. I agreed to give them a try, I've got 2 weeks worth to try but going back next week for a check up and possible repeat prescription.
My questions are has anybody good/bad experiences with this Drug with regards to sleep? I hear it is great for people with low tolerance and can be used for long periods of time, but I've also read about the dependency of it so would like a little insight before I start my course tonight.
Kind regards,
Lee.

I was given trazadone to try and then mirtazapine just like you in the hope, I suppose, that an off-licence prescription for sleeping pills beyond four weeks wasn't necessary.
Like you trazadone didn't help my sleep much. It may have helped me sleep more deeply and, being an antidepressant, I suppose, it sort of jacked my mood up. This latter effect made it quite hard for me to stop taking them. Not that I was particularly depressed, more a case of re-accommodating myself to my usual mood. I have read that trazadone is very often prescribed by doctors hoping it will help with sleep, but it's an antidepressant, not a sleeping pill.
With my mirtazapine dose right up to 45 mg a day I could just about doze on and off for a few hours. Ultimately the weight gain problem with it was becoming a health hazard and I was switched, much according to my own suggestion, to fluvoxamine. Now, with different living accommodation, I just take melatonin and zopiclone. Mirtazapine sent my problem with restless leg syndrome (RLS) into overdrive. I also had visual effects with it: I could suddenly look up and see nothing but a sort of red screen and at another time a blue screen or a sort of liquid metal type image. Some people insist they are not hallucinations; they're a very close thing. I would hate to need to take mirtazapine again – in fact "hate" is too weak a word. Its psychological effect is very good, it really makes you feel relaxed (until it starts your RLS up); the side effects are unacceptable.

I have it and have had no problem with it , the lower doze and the middle doze i slept well with it , but now i am on 45mg and do find it harder to get to sleep so i was prescribed Promethazine to take along side it at night time , some people say it gives you weight gain but i don't know as because i have physical health problems i am overweight anyway due to little exercise , never had any side effects from it but then i don't usually with any Antidepressant , i suggest that you give it a go and let your body see how it takes to it as at the end of the day you will not know until you have tried it , good luck and please take care xx

Thanks for replies.
Well I took 15mg last night along with my other stuff (Melatonin & ZMA) and 45 mins later I was asleep. Woke up 9 hours later feeling quite tired still, almost like I needed another 9 but after breakfast I felt fine. It's certainly cut my morning in half but that's not a bad thing once I control the dosage time etc.
It was taken a little too late last night I believe, 1am which was 1 hour before sleep as advised. So tonight I will take them not long after I get home and hopefully I'll be awake earlier tomorrow.
Again, thanks.
Lee.

In fact no sedative effect at all. Wtf???
Sick to death of this crap... I want to just overdose on the rest but apparently the higher the dose the more awake you feel. Great huh?
Might just kill my GP instead, I hear you get good meds in nut houses...

I'll stop posting now, my insomnia is untreatable, I'm used as a guinea pig and I'm a horrible person to speak to when I have been yet again raped of sleep. Good luck all, I'm a lost cause. It's a shame too as I had a lot of love to give to the right person.......
