Mirtazapine diet club

I thought I would start a thread about trying to lose weight on this drug. If others are currently dieting, please add your experiences here. I would like to discover whether we gain weight on mirtazapine purely because it increases our appetite, or whether other factors are at play. I certainly gained weight quickly when I started on mirtazapine (around 1.5 stone). My appetite was revenous, especially for sugary foods. I tried to com off mirtazapine around 6 months in and failed. I lost half a stone in the week I waas off it, but most of that was due to severe nausea. When I went back on the drug I did not gain more than a couple of pounds, but I was being very careful what I ate. My weight has been steady now for two years.

I am not happy carrying around the extra stone however, and so have decided to diet. I am on day 8 and it is VERY hard. But I have lost two pounds so far. This is with me still eating 1700 - 1800 calories a day. I have a very active physical job and so my daily calorie requirement is 2100.

I have also started taking raspberry ketones and green coffee bean extract as of this morning in the hope that it will help me to burn fat. The interesting thing is, the amouont of weight I have lost is the same as would be expected from a person who is not on mirtazapine.

Alli is a horrible product. I only lost a small amount of weight, and even then, the stomach discomfort was not even close to worth it. There are much better alternatives out there. I switched over to the Lady Soma Detox and started dropping weight like crazy..and my stomach feels much better. Alli is a joke.

So the results of my long battle with mirtazipine and weight gain/ sugar fat and carbs cravings/sleep issues /withdrawal and feeling on an even keel for the purposes of this thread is the following-that mirtazipine increases glucose uptake to the cells, which leaves you with a lower blood sugar, hence the cravings. So you are not just a bad person eating cake in the night or when you wake up. It is the blinking medication. I am now looking in to low gi combined with slimming world. Off mirt for 3 months I lost 2.5 stone but being back on it as I couldn't sleep properly plus my mood and anxiety got worse (could have been withdrawal, could have been illness who knows!) I have put a stone back on and the cravings at your of control! Such an eye opening to start taking it then 2 days later go through the kitchen like a one woman plague of locusts.

Message or ask if you want more info!

i've been on mirtazapine for yrs and have ballooned up from 11 stone to just under 20 stone and have got so unfit. its hard for me to stick to a diet but I can't quit these without my insomnia being so bad that I would rather be dead so quitting them isn't an option but I need to get fitter fast and need to know thats possible on mirtazapine. I am so unfit I feel like i'm on deaths door and its mirtazapine thats done that to me. I get chest pains and out of breath walking up a single flight of stairs these days.

Hi, I am a new user to Mirt although have been on other meds for quite a few years. A recent bout of severe anxiety and depression led the Dr to prescribe this as well. It has been great for helping me sleep and the anxiety is beginning to return to normal for me but I have already gained 1/2 stone. I was already overweight (which I was not happy about) and now I am extremely overweight and the heaviest I have been since I was pregnant lol ! Some of this was due to an amazing appetite, especially for sweet things like choc or biscuits in the first week of taking them! I have started to watch what I eat and am exercising more but it is too early to tell if this is going to help. However, doing some research I came across a study about the effects of Mirt on weight gain and it had some interesting info in it which I though some people might like to read. It is very medical/academic jargon filled but if you can get past that then there is some good info into why weight gain might be so easy and weight loss so difficult on mirt.

I love how it is making me feel and sleep better but i am now having to make some major changes so that I can continue taking my prescription. no more candy or cookies and more exercise. I have cut back on sodas and calorie intake but i am still not seeing much of a difference. I really dont want to choose between my coffee or my medication! please help haha

Hello i put on just over a stone in just a couple of weeks of starting mirtazipine. i was just hungry all the time and craving sweet stuff! it had just been Xmas and the chocolate was in the cupboards!!

anyway, march i decided to sort myself out and went on a 30 day diet plan, this was healthy and exwecise every other day (30 min HIITs) i lost 9lbs in 30 days!! I now go to the gym most days for 30mins cardio and 30min weights and ive lost a few more lbs. but im not where i was before and not sure ill get there, if i do its a very slow process!! Amazing how quickly weight goes on but takes so much longer to lose!! i love it for helping me sleep but unhappy with the weight gain! wonder if its time to try and wean off it. I used to run a lot and find i haven't been able to as much or as quick as i used to either! Good luck!! x

Hey, is there anyone else here with good results? I never, ever had to count calories before in my LIFE, and I felt so stupid today for realising I'd eaten more than 2000 kcal! i should, for my height and weight, be eating until 1300 more or less. The hunger + slower metabolism - how do you cope, evergreen? I'm cutting roasted chicken wings for tomorrow - tuna with cauliflower it is. no fried eggs - poached eggs instead. Hide peanut butter. Add more actual oatmeal to my oatmeal (it has chia seeds, almond flour, dried coconut, and sweetness. Oh, the calories of things...). Anyone wanting to add to my madness or shout some hope? (diet yes, bad mood no, please 😄)

    Hi all,

I have been on mirtazapine 15mg for a couple of years now due to insomnia.

In had trouble getting to sleep, and staying asleep. I would be awake till early hours, and then wake really early too, and it just got worse and worse.

Mirtazapine has definitely sorted out my sleeping patterns, but I have definitely gained weight on it, probably 2 stone at least. I am now about 14st10lbs.

I honestly don't think that I overeat, and I do exercise with my job. It just seems that no matter what I do, I just don't lose any weight, in fact I think it's still creeping on, and I can't explain why due to purely dietary habits. It's like my metabolism is slowed down waaaay to much.

I don't eat much during the day, due to work, and I eat a dinner when I get home in the evening, a lot of the time can be quite late, like 8pm. I don't know if that's why, because it's so late?

I'm at the point where I don't want to take it anymore because I feel uncomfortable at the weight I am now, and truth be told, I haven't taken it for like 4/5 days now.

    Just wondering what will happen.....

I'd like to join the mirtazapine diet club! i started Mirtazapine 15mg a few months back, have gained around a stone and a half. pretty fed up with it - it's simply not fair! - but like others have said, it's working well in other respects. I'm also on venlafaxine 150mg.

I go on holiday on Monday for a week, with my husband, daughter and mother-in-law (not a time to start a diet!!!) but keen to on return. Since starting mirtazapine, i'm always hungry (yet never feel full up), crave sweets/chocolate like crazy. Tried hard to control what i ate at first as i'd heard so much about the weight gain, but lost that control pretty quickly!

I've joined WW (weightwatchers) but not yet actively stuck to it. Will report back, and hope to hear how others are getting on.
