Mirtazapine diet club

I thought I would start a thread about trying to lose weight on this drug. If others are currently dieting, please add your experiences here. I would like to discover whether we gain weight on mirtazapine purely because it increases our appetite, or whether other factors are at play. I certainly gained weight quickly when I started on mirtazapine (around 1.5 stone). My appetite was revenous, especially for sugary foods. I tried to com off mirtazapine around 6 months in and failed. I lost half a stone in the week I waas off it, but most of that was due to severe nausea. When I went back on the drug I did not gain more than a couple of pounds, but I was being very careful what I ate. My weight has been steady now for two years.

I am not happy carrying around the extra stone however, and so have decided to diet. I am on day 8 and it is VERY hard. But I have lost two pounds so far. This is with me still eating 1700 - 1800 calories a day. I have a very active physical job and so my daily calorie requirement is 2100.

I have also started taking raspberry ketones and green coffee bean extract as of this morning in the hope that it will help me to burn fat. The interesting thing is, the amouont of weight I have lost is the same as would be expected from a person who is not on mirtazapine.

Still losing weight, slowly but surely. I had a couple of days this week when I over ate, but still down on last week. I'm loving feeling slim again. smile

      Yay!! Awesome! Congrats!

I am also on the right track (at least right now). Had 1200 cal yesterday and today I'll up to 1400. Lost 1.2 lbs since being on mirt (last week). Hope the trend continues!

      Good luck for today!!

That's really well done because it is so difficult not to gain weight on mirtazapine to begin with. You must have an iron will power!

LOL no I am just really fed up of being overweight! LOL It's not helping my depression either, so ... I am tacklling both full force! But thank you! smile

Things are looking good on the scale this morning. Stayed at the same weight as yesterday, even though I had 1800 cal over the day.

I am now aiming for 1400 - 1600 cal per day with some leeway up to 1800 cal. Will see how that's going!

Excellent, well done you! I think you may have the record for the only person to actually lose weight at the start of mirtazapine treatment. I reckon that by the time your body adjusts to it, the weight will just fly off you.

Naw... that's not going to happen I am sure! And there will be days that I am gaining too... afterall it only makes sense to weigh weekly and not daily like I am (slightly obsessing).

I can also see that right now I am very strict, but there are thoughts of carrot-walnut-cupcakes with creamcheese topping on my mind that will become louder at some point!

Yup and as expected I am ending the week on mirt with 2 lbs up. No go!

i saw my pdoc today and he could absolutely not understand that gaining weight as already obese person would be just as detrimental to my mood and sanity as stopping mirt and looking for an alternative.

we agreed at the end that I try to go without mirt for 10 days. Until then he wants to find out about Topomax and another drug that can offset the weight gain through mirt.

lets cross fingers, cause I have to admit I felt like me again on mirt!

As I thought. Unfortunately weight gain is almost inevitable on mirt to begin with. But it DOES get better but you have to put up with the weight gain for around 6 months which is too much for some people. I was lucky in that I was very slim to begin with (only 9 stone 10 and quite tall at 5ft 9), so the weight gain did not make me obese, but I went up to over 11 stone. Down to 10 st 3 now. I have found that green coffee bean extract helps to raise my metabolism and have also been taking raspberry ketones too. I know the green coffee bean definitely helps me burn more calories.

Good luck Mermaid, I hope you don't feel too back coming off the mirt. Soounds like you have a very good understanding doctor there. smile

Thanks so much Evergreen! Since I was on such a low dose for just a week I had no issues coming off mirt.

I personally think my pdoc is an arrogant prick. He doesnt believe a word I say when it comes to "how much weight gain to expect". He says it's not more than 2-6 lbs and then it'll stop. Riiiiiiight!!

And he was PERSONALLY offended when I said that I would love to take mirt together with something that can offset the weight gain, but until then I won't touch it and go back to the Zopiclone I hated so much, but didnt make me fat.

He is playing a power game now. For next week he didnt give me an appointment, though told me that if I am not feeling well, he has all day Tuesday wide open. He also told me that he is expecting me to have suicidal ideations again. He wants to be right and he wants me to come and tell him that he was right.

The sad thing is, that I can be very very very headstrong...

      biggrin

Yikes - today I went a tad over with 1700 cals. Hoping it wont ruin things... but so far I feel good and pretty optimistic.

Can't wait to see what this week brings!

Have just been reading through this thread, and glad to have found it. I have put on over 3 and a half stone over the past year since starting mirtazapine January 2014.

At various points throughout the last year I have decided right it's time to lose weight, but then with no idea where to start and the bouts of hunger I have failed. I first tried to stick to eating at meal times, but with the hunger it is hard not to snack, so this didn't work.

Before starting mirtazapine I had lost about a stone and a half from my usual weight. I have never had to try losing weight before because my weight has always been stable, and I have always been happy with it. So now after putting on so much from mirtazapine I don't know where to start.

I read something in these posts about someone being given a GP referral for an exercise plan, does anyone have more details about this?

I haven't personally had any help from my GP except for some blood tests which showed reduced kidney function and low vitamin D. Low vitamin D can result in weight gain and depression. I have since been taking a strong vitamin D supplement and I am sure this has helped with both. There are various websites which help with exercise and calorie counting. myfitnesspal is free and very good. It helps you work out how many calories you need each day and how many calories you burn off with various exercises. Then you can either eat back those calories or set them against your daily amount. The main thing which influences your success though is a real determination and strong will power. Mine has waned a bit during the past two weeks but I have not over eaten, just maintained my daily allowance to keep my weight steady. I'm taking a bit of a breather.

Good luck with your weight loss. It really is possible on mirtazapine and it feels really nice to get slim again. As Kate Moss said 'Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels'. That is SO true.

Thankyou for your encouragement, good to hear that it will work eventually!

Lol, I think I enjoy food too much to ever be "skinny", that only occurs when I am ill and I don't want that. But it would be nice to fit into my favourite jeans and dresses again! I have had to buy new clothes, two sizes bigger, and even new bras. I didn't want to buy loads though, so I just wear the same three pairs of jeans all the time.

Yes I thnk determination is what I will struggle with, also motivation!

      Hi Sunset!

First of all congrats for never having had to diet! That's actually really good! I have been dieting since my teens and I've tried them all. wink

Now that I started mirt I was terrified of gaining weight - I had just lost 20 lbs and was aiming for another 50 lbs or even more over the next 2 years.

So my approach right now is to use one of the calorie counting websites. I also have a fitbit bracelet that measures my steps, but also gives me my calorie expenditure per day. It tells me how much I can eat and drink throughout the day in order to lose half a pound or a pound a week. You can click and choose. It's very easy.

In order to curb my cravings I am taking a fibre supplement called PGX before meals and it makes me less hungry so my portions are smaller and I can resist snacking in between.

i hope this helps - let us know if you have any other questions.

Oh and I havent asked my GP for help recently. He did refer me to a Nutritionist though who I saw a few times.

      Hi Mermaid,

Lol, thanks! Granted there were times when I was a little heavier than I normally was, but it never really bothered me that much, I've generally been happy with my weight. But now being three stone heavier, and not wanting to put on even MORE weight I decided it's time to do something about it. I think it will make me feel happier again, and also less out of breath walking up hills! I never used to get so out of breath from walking, it's not good!

Your fitbit bracelet sounds awesome! Will have to get one. I have just been out to buy joggers and a top with the intention to go jogging in them. I'm not a runner at all so not sure how that's going to go yet!

Yeah I'm not really a fan of going to the doctors, I tend to avoid it other than going to pick up my prescription.

      Thanks for your message!

Awesome! There is an App / online page connected with the fitbit. Once you are online let me know - we can actually cheer each other on with "daily steps" taken etc.

That's also the program I use to track my calorie intake / expenditure. It's fairly easy and accurate.

Oh and I totally hear you about the "out of breath" experience! Have that going up a flight of stairs! NOT GOOD! LOL

Hah! You know what! My kidney values arent great either and I have also added Vitamin D3, B6 and B12 to my diet. It can't hurt. Vitamin D is something we don't get enough off, even if we sat in our bikinis on the rooftop 24/7... at least not north of Atlanta. wink

Yeah don't get much sunshine here either during winter, I admit I am fed up with winter now, I really want it to be summer! Although that brings hayfever, I can't win!

    • Posted

actually.... mirtazapine is a histamine blocker - I also have hayfever and I am hoping that with taking mirt I dont have to take OTC allergy drugs!
    • Posted

I used to get itchy hives every day so had to take an anti histamine daily. Since being on mirtazapine, I haven't had to.
    • Posted

Hah! Interesting! so Mirt may really help with allergies.

Now... the weight question is another story. The two pounds I was down on Monday are back up today. Frustrating. I had 1600 cal yesterday. Maybe I need to keep below that.

aww sorry sad then I suppose I will have to start taking another pill soon too.... URGHS

I can't believe how much crap is going into my body right now!

      Sertraline, Mirtazapine, Wellbutrin, Clonazepam ...

    • Posted

Thanks darling! Right now I am just down because of the 2 lbs that are back up. sad Off to shower... maybe I can wash them off LOL
    • Posted

Ahh don't get too down about it, that does happen. One thing I do know is that it's best to weigh yourself on something more like a weekly basis rather than a daily basis, as your weight can fluctuate slightly, so weighing on a weekly basis is better for seeing your overall loss.
    • Posted

Yes you are completely right. I am just obsessing over it since I have nothing better to do right now. smile And also because I want to be slender and pretty and find a boyfriend LOL
    • Posted

Oh trust me you don't want the hassle!

Aww and I am sure you are pretty just as you are!

    • Posted

LOL you are right! My dog is a much better companion! smile

pretty on the inside maybe.... But thanks smile
