Mirtazapine diet club

I thought I would start a thread about trying to lose weight on this drug. If others are currently dieting, please add your experiences here. I would like to discover whether we gain weight on mirtazapine purely because it increases our appetite, or whether other factors are at play. I certainly gained weight quickly when I started on mirtazapine (around 1.5 stone). My appetite was revenous, especially for sugary foods. I tried to com off mirtazapine around 6 months in and failed. I lost half a stone in the week I waas off it, but most of that was due to severe nausea. When I went back on the drug I did not gain more than a couple of pounds, but I was being very careful what I ate. My weight has been steady now for two years.

I am not happy carrying around the extra stone however, and so have decided to diet. I am on day 8 and it is VERY hard. But I have lost two pounds so far. This is with me still eating 1700 - 1800 calories a day. I have a very active physical job and so my daily calorie requirement is 2100.

I have also started taking raspberry ketones and green coffee bean extract as of this morning in the hope that it will help me to burn fat. The interesting thing is, the amouont of weight I have lost is the same as would be expected from a person who is not on mirtazapine.

HEy Evergreen and everyone else! How are you guys doing?

I am sitting in front of my SAD Lamp having my mourning coffee (pun intended!).

For the last week I've been on 1300-1500 cal a day and have taken Mirt 4 out of 7 days and all I got was a 0.4 lb weight loss. That's pretty much the equivalent of a good BM.

Ugh! smile I am flying out today to visit a girlfriend in Boston. There might be a chance that I can see her doctor and try mirtazapine along with metformin for a month and see if that's working or not. Crossing fingers!!

    Happy Easter everyone!

Mmmhhh do you think it's totally OCD if I brought my scale along to my friends place? I dont think I can go without weighing myself for 4 full days.... biggrin)

Good luck, Mermaid. I hope you get to try it. I'm doing well. My weight has been stable for almost three weeks but in the last two days I have lost another pound, so almost back on track. Only 5 more pounds to go to my target of being the same weight as when I first went on the mirt.

    Good morning everyone!

I saw my pdoc again yesterday (have been taking mirtazapine on and off on an irregular basis in the last 10 days). He decided last month that he wouldnt want to give me anything to counteract the weight gain until I had seen a specialist here in town to get her opinion/input.

I felt that these 4 weeks were lost time and was very upset about not getting the support I was asking for. I knew I needed Mirt, but also knew that the weight gain would put me back into depression.

After reading lots and lots of medical studies and articles online about the experiences with Mirt/Metformin, I decided to go rogue (no support from my pdoc or GP) and do my own "medical study" for the next 4 weeks. That's when I see the specialist and I hope to have some data to show her the effect of Mirtazapine with Metformin and Orlistat combined with a low fat healthy diet.

The "Easter bunny" brought me a month supply of Metformin and Orlistat (Alli). Alli is an OTC weight reduction drug, that works by binding ingested fat and moving it through the bowels without it being metabolised by the body.

I have now committed to taking Mirtazapine 15 mg each night along with  3x60mg Orlistat and 2x 500mg Metformin as well as a multivitamin supplement. I am also eating a low fat diet with 1300 - 1500 cal.

In 3-4 weeks I should know

    A) if Mirtazapine actually makes me feel better

    B) if Metformin and Alli with dieting stop the weight gain or

    C) if Metformin and Alli with dieting help losing more weight

Medical studies seem to be showing that a mean loss of 10 lbs over 12 weeks is possible with Metformin and dieting. So I should be seeing at least a 3-4 lb loss by end of April.

I will be interested to hear how you get on with your proposed regime. I stick to a low fat, low sugar diet for other reasons, but I do find I get hungry sometimes.

Oh yes I should have added that I am using a natural "filler" called PGX that comes in granules, pills and protein shakes to make me feel fuller longer. It's a highly engineered/processed fibre and makes a huge difference to me.

When I am in a bind and need to eat something I use nutribar or slim fast meal replacement bars (lots of protein as well, but contain sugar).

Fingers crossed for you, Mermaid. I look forward to hopefully hearing a positive outcome.

Thanks so much evergreen!! Yes... I hope too. My pdoc said yesterday "you are anything you can do" and I thought "I am doing anything because I am desparate".

In my experience it's impossible to lose weight on Mirt due to several reasons. The first is because it's extremely hard to ignore the constant intense cravings for food and I never feel completely full even after eating an enormous meal. Secondly, Mirtazapine screws around with many hormones in your body such as cortisol (stress hormone), insulin levels anf the serotonin in your brain. So essentially your body's metabolism is completely screwed up and you can't metabolise properly or normally, compared to others who aren't on Mirt. That's why it's so hard losing the weight. That's why I want to get off Mirt so bad. I know I'll be able to lose once I'm off it. The most important thing you can do for yourself is mske sure your diet is healthy and balanced, and drink loads of water. Also exercise daily. This really helped me.

    Good luck to you!

      Thanks, Sapphire.

I have managed to lose a stone whilst on mirtazapine, but I agree that it would have been impossible at the beginning. I think you have to wait until your body rebalances itself which can take 6 months or more.

Well things have stalled over tha past four weeks. I have stayed thee same weight in my weigh ins now every Sunday for the past 5 Sundays. I did get a pound lower for four days a couple of weeks ago, only to put two pounds back on last week. But some how every Sunday, despite my fluctuations up and down, I have stayed at exactly the same weight. I haave studied my daily food diary and realise that I have only under eaten by around 2000 calories over the whole month. You need to under eat by 3500 calories to lose a pound, but I should have lost at leaast half a pound. Maybe now that I'm lighter, I need to revise the daily amount that I need each day, especiaally as my workload at the stables has decreased so I am getting less exercise. As of yesterday, I have kick started my diet. I am going to rein in my eating again and make a final push for my target weight. I just hope I can keep it up.

The most depressing thing is, that I have stayed the same weight over the past month whilst still not allowing myself many of the things I used to eat. The amount of food I need each day really is a pitiful amount. Essentially, I have not had a single takeaway, and very few snacks since Christmas. It's hard work this dieting. And if you want to stay slim, it's a permanent thing.

Ugh I am sorry evergreen! Yes constant dieting is hard and I don't think anyone ca stick 100% of the time to it. I. Totally hear you when it comes to not allowing yourself a treat once in a while.

I believe eve you have to give in some times. Otherwise you'll end up binging.

Like me.... Yesterday I hadn't first chocolate fir weeks, today I finished the 100g Lindt extra creamy.... And threw in a bag of chocolate trail mix for good measure. At least it was organic. LOL

hang in there.... The weight will come off eventually. And yes. The lighter you are the less calories your basic metabolic rate uses up. So you might have to recalculate your daily intake and weekly deficit.

today I am sure I am over 2000 cal, but apparently I've burned 2900.

    Hey, hey..

I am glad that I found this discussion. It is very useful.

Let me tell my story. I started to use mirtazepine 30mg 3 months ago, when I had an extreme insomnia while starting to use Zoloft.

When I started to use mirtazepine I was in the excellent shape and in my ideal weight.

Now 3 months have passed and I have gained 1 stone (which is 6 kg in our, metric system). I am still in the normal weight range but I really do not like myself, anfd particularly these extra kgs, which are around my waist.

1.5 month ago I joined kung-fu school in China and therefore I am having 5 hours a day exercise (6 day in a week), but, but.. I still can not get rid of these 6 kg (1 stone) and my belly.

Three weeks ago I started to have a diet and reduce my calory intake.. But still I can not lose weight.

Besides, there has to be something connected with water intake because my weight can fluctuate for 1.5 kgs per day.. Or these Chinese scales are crazy smile

Different calculators say that I would have to have 2254 kalories to maintain my weight and 1754 - to lose half a kg per week, but it definetely does not work for me.

    Please, advice..

12 lbs ... Yes. I feel with you! It's so depressing to work so hard and not see results ...

See itthis way: Kung fu as sport 6 times a week is super healthy and also fights depression!!

Hi Kirke. Sorry you are struggling so much with your weight due to the mirtazapine. I am of the firm belief that for at least 6 months, though probably even longer, the mirtazapine creates chaos with your metabolism and it is virtually impossible to lose weight. The most you can do is to exercise and keep your food intake down as much as posssible. However, in my experience, this phase is temporary and your body learns to rebalance itself with the mirtazapine so that your metabolism increases again. I don't think it goes completely back to normal, but the improvement is enough to make weight loss possible. Although I have flatlined for a few weeks with my weight loss, I have started losing it again this week. I think the flat lining was due to steroid joint injections rather than the mirt.

So my advice to you is not to panic too much about the weight problems at this stage. Try to limit it as much as you can by continuing what you are currently doing. But don't drop your calories too low as this has a downwards effect on your metabolism too. Then when things start to settle down and your body has adapted itself to the mirt, you should be able to lose weight like a normal person. Good luck!
