Mirtazapine sedation/groggy feeling - Does it wear off?

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi all, So I've been on Mirt now for about 6 weeks and recently went up to 30mg 4 nights ago but the sedation is horrible and I'm left feeling very tired and fatigued through the day, I feel like i can't do anything and lifes just passing me by. I want to wake up feeling on top of the world and raring to go!

I do feel like Mirt has helped with my depression but the horrible hangover groggy feeling the next day is unbearable and it makes me feel depressed about it,  I just want to sleep all the time, it lasts all day until I take my next dose.

Does anyone else feel the same on this med? Does this feeling eventually wear off? Because if it doesn't then I'll have to change meds AGAIN as i just can't live like this for much longer!

Thanks,

Liam

Hi Julie, do you think if I took 7.5mg tonight it might make me feel less sleepy during the day? I've heard it's more sedating at lower doses but the opposite was true with me, how did you find you felt the lower the dose?
    • Posted

hi liam, when i lowered my dose i felt i had more energy like you the higher the dose the more sedicated i felt. yes you could try that liam, want you need to do his try and relax at night with relaxation music and understand u are feeling un well because of this drug and each day it will get better, its not that bad as long as you understand its the awfull drug leaving your body it doesnt take long. easy and you feel better :-)  try the lower dose if not go back to 15mg for a day or so and then lower the dose for more days does

Really odd that the first night of cutting down to 10mg I don't feel tired at all! I'm normally fast alseep by now. Feel wide awake!

I'm feeling ok today been out with a friend for a coffee and a chat, it was nice to get out and we had a wander round town. Just taking each day as it comes atm. Today was one of the better days out of the last few weeks.
    • Posted

Yeah, I keep worrying about how i'm going to feel when i wake up, bit of a lottery atm! I know every day can't be a good day but I hope the good days get more and more. Hope you are well too Julie smile

of course you will be worrying about how u will feel in the morning , youve been on mirtz its not surprising im the same! once that awfull drug is out your system u can look at that issue maybe try something else or nothing thats ur choice! no one as good days every day we would be robots if we did :-)

Hi all, Been to the Dr's today and she has given some Trazodone! After doing some research online it appears that this drug could be MORE sedating than Mirtz!!! I told her how i was feeling on Mirtz and why i wanted off them but she has precribed this instead which is meant to be very sedating and makes you feel rubbish through the day, I really don't know what to do anymore!!! Should I start taking the Trazodone or not? I don't want to feel any worse than I do now and i need to feel OK on Friday as i have a driving experience day planned for my birthday!

hi liam, what are these doctors playing at! u have got your self off mirtz well done u dont want to be sedated u want to live!  try it for one day and see how u feel if u feel seduated get back to the gp and tell him straight u want something to lift you not to sedate you!

I really am I my whits end with all of this!! It's like she hasn't listened to a word I've said and she's just picked any AD and gave me it! It's a very old drug as well, I might try it for one night and see how i feel and if I feel like crap I won't take anymore.
    • Posted

I was wondering how you was liam. How do you feel now your off mirtz? Do you feel you need another AD or do you think you could carry on without taking anything. I've never heard of trazodone. I hope your mood lifts for friday.
    • Posted

do doctors listen! text book stuff to them, u know ur own body and personalty not them! who wants to be sedated not many ! how can u live a full life walking arround like a zombie! thats not living .. theres many ADs out there and not all sedate you..

Hi Kat, I am still tapering off mirtz I'm taking less than half a pill but my Dr said just bin them! No mention of any withdrawal which I think I might be getting - got the shakes and upset stomach. I do need another AD yes as my depression has not lifted enough to stop taking them.
    • Posted

What do I have to do to get a non sedating AD!? I told her in detail and I said I don't want anything sedating like mirtz! Yet have been given trazodone, it's for insomia which I don't have!
    • Posted

You really need to see a psychatrist if possible but that's another wait!  You want to feel better as soon as possible from this dreadful illness. You was doing so well. Has your mood gone down as you've tapered down?
    • Posted

Yes my mood has gone down a bit since tapering off mirtz but it wasn't really that high to begin with so only small changes. I've asked my CPN to make an appt with the consultant psychiatrist so we'll se how long that takes!
    • Posted

Yes I've tried sertraline and it didn't help me Julie.
    • Posted

explain to your gp u dont want something to sedate you..must be something better for you
    • Posted

Tell them you need to see someone asap. Ask if there are any cancellations.  I was told I would probably have to wait 6 weeks to see a psych. I had to go private first of all as I just couldn't wait that long.
    • Posted

Well I've just taken a trazodone! Lets see what happens now, suppose one night can't hurt to see how it affects me.... feeling a bit nervous now took it 5 mins ago.
    • Posted

Hi Kat, I slept like a log and didn't wake up once! I do feel tired this morning though but no worse than usual and I did also take a 1/4 of mirtz as I'm still tapering off despite the Dr telling me to just bin the mirtz, I don't want withdrawal symptims on top of everything else! It maybe wasn't a good idea to combine the mirtz & traz together as they both have sedation properties, I'll try only trazodone tonight and see how that goes.
    • Posted

Glad you slept ok. The mirtz should be out of your system soon. Was you sleeping ok with just the mirtz. See how your mood is today.
    • Posted

I wasn't sleeping as well with the lower doses of mirtz I kept waking up through the night. it took about an hour for the traz to kick in last night and then I fell fast asleep. Feel groggy this morning I've had a srong coffee!
    • Posted

Are you working? If not perhaps you can have a nap later if you feel tired. See how you feel as the day goes on.
    • Posted

No i'm off work atm so i might have a nap later if I still feel tired. I'll let you know how the day goes.
    • Posted

Just looked back at your replies over the days. Why didn't you ask your doctor to be put back on venlafaxine?  You said you were on it before and it worked for you.
    • Posted

I did ask for venlafaxine but she said she can't precribe ven it needs done by a psychiatrist!! Never heard that one before...
    • Posted

Just had a nap and now I feel worse! Really groggy and not with it at all, feel a bit confused. I might just stop taking all drugs if this is how they make you feel, i hate it.
    • Posted

I'm sure my gp prescribed ven. That's not great for you if your feeling confused. My meds are making my depression worse! Hate this illness!!
    • Posted

Awful isn't it Kat, I don't think I'll take anything tonight! If I can't get to sleep I still have some promethazine left over so i'll take one of those. I've phoned the Dr's and told them how bad I feel and that I slept for 12 hours and feel confused but my Dr was only on half a day today so i'll have to wait until tomorrow.
    • Posted

Typical that you couldn't talk to your doctor! I hope you feel a bit better through the day. Was it a big dose of the traz? It takes time to get into your system doesn't it.
    • Posted

My Dr has just phoned me and told me to not to take anymore trazodone and has written a prescription for venlafaxine! I have taken this in the past and had good results from it, i can't remember the side effects at first do they make you tired? Hoping they have less sedation than mirtz and trazodone!! smile
    • Posted

You have a good doctor. I don't think ven is sedating. Do you know what dosage your doctor is giving you and when to take it?
    • Posted

Had a good conversation with her, glad she rang and a bit surprised after the reception said she was finished on half a day! I'm starting on 37.5mg for now and if tolerated it will get doubled at my next Dr's appt which is on Tuesday next week. it says take one daily on the box so i assume it doesn't matter what time of day i take it? Both the mirtz and the trazodone said to take at night, when is the best time to take venlafaxine? If I take it at night I might not sleep? Can't remember what time of day i took it last time but I was taking two doses a day so one at night and one in the morning i think.
    • Posted

I think that's the lowest dose of ven so you shouldn't have any trouble with it being too sedative. I wouldn't like to say when to take it. I've always had higher doses to take morning and night.
    • Posted

Starting at the lowest dose because i'm quite sensitive to meds, I can only see how it goes! I know I can tolerate it as I've had it before and I just hope i get the same results from it as i did back then! We'll see.... I dunno if i should take one now or wait until later closer to bed time, feeling a bit anxious about taking it after the bad side effects from the mirtz and traz sad
    • Posted

You might still have the traz in your system so I would leave it a little while.  What dose was your highest when you took it before?
    • Posted

I think it was about 150mg but not 100% sure, what dose are you on? The traz has a short half life so hopefully it should be leaving my system a bit now.
    • Posted

Your right if it's got a short half life. It should be out of your system now. Do you think you'll sleep ok without any sedative effect? My dose is 225mg. I take 150mg slow release in the morning and 75 at night.
    • Posted

I have some promethazine incase i can't sleep, i'll see how i feel after i've taken the ven if I'm wired or not.
    • Posted

I take it that is a sleeping tablet. At least you've got that as back up.
    • Posted

Well they can be used as a sleeping tablet, it's for allergies as well. the Dr gave me them because they aren't as addictive as proper sleeping pills.
    • Posted

Well I hope you get a restful night. Have you decided when to take the ven?
    • Posted

I think I'm going to take it after dinner in about an hour or so, hopefully everything will be ok!
    • Posted

Just taken a ven! Waiting to see what happens now.... Anxious!!
    • Posted

Well I feel more wide awake now even a bit giddy and restless, my pupils are massive! It's so long since I last took them I can't remember if this is normal after a first dose.
    • Posted

You did say that you were sensitive to meds. Why don't you try to go to bed and relax. If your still awake in a little while take the other drug that might help you sleep.
    • Posted

Tried going to sleep not gonna happen! Just took a sleeping pill so hopefully that will help, watching TV atm.
    • Posted

Managed to get some sleep, about 5 hours so not ideal but better than what I thought I was going to get! feel dull this morning with a fuzzy head but not as tired as i have been feeling.
    • Posted

Glad you managed to get some sleep. How do you feel in yourself this morning? Remember you've got to give it time to get into your system. You've got your day out today haven't you. Hope you can enjoy yourself.
    • Posted

Thanks Kat, I don't feel too bad really, I'm sort of looking forward to today but part of me is wondering if it's the right thing to do. Hopefully i'll be able to enjoy myself! Feel a bit dopey but I did take a promethazine as well so that will have a hangover effect.

Going out today will help you take your mind off things. Hopefully being busy today will help you sleep well tonight.
