Mirtazapine withdrawal

Posted , 136 users are following.

Hey everyone,

I've been on Mirtazapine 30mg since Feb his year but I've had alot of problems with. Ear infections, burning mouth syndrome etc. so my Psychiatrist think's I should come of it. He told me to cut down to 15mg and only take them for a week and then just stop. So I finally stopped taking the 15mg on Mon night and I feel terrible.

It's not just my moods (my depression/anxiety had been great before coming off med), I physically feel really sick, been feeling extremely nauseated and last night couldn't sleep because I kept thinking I was going to throw up. Is this a normal reaction coming off mirtazapine?

Because my depression/anxiety had gotten alot better, we didn't feel the need to just take me off mirtazapine and put on on another drug because I thought I was cured. Plus, I don't want to take any more antidepressants at all really.

PLEASE, any help or advice you offer would be greatly appreciated because I'm really worried now and I don't want to have to go back to taking mirtazapine sad .

Will the withdrawal last long? How long will it take to fully get the tablets out of my system?

Please help,

thanks,

Star

oh yes margaret, try herbal kalms they are also a good alternative for sleep and calmness, none benzo. plenty of fresh root veg soup, water and bananas, to keep your energy up, keep off sugars, caffeine and other manufactured junk for now, it will help... its is a dark place you are in but it will get brighter, all the best for now...

    Hi Margaret,

I was hoping to see a post from you when I checked in tonight but alas, none.

Have you had any luck yet from your medicos ie. downers to help you sleep or even just acknowledgement and assistance.

Just a quick post to let You know that I am concerned and it sounds like you feel all alone with this.

You are not as the people on this site get it, so keep in touch if you can.

The internet is a wonderful thing and even across the other side of the world (Australia) there are people thinking of you.

    My thoughts are with you.

Hi to everyone for all your kind words of support, it really makes me feel that I'm not alone in my plight. I did manage to speak to the doctor, not my usual one I might add, can't say she was very supportive, she wanted to know why I want to come of my, says I need to stay

On them, I told her that it was my choice, she wasn't at happy, my body my choice, how does she know how badly the drug was affecting me, they should be made to try them out before voicing their option.

After some debate, she did prescribe me a sleeping tablet and Inderal which I hope will give me some relief, I did take the liberty of asking her how long it would take to be free from withdrawal, she said 2 weeks, she really is having a laugh, perhaps she should join these forums and get a true insight of the real world.

Anyway I am keeping my fingers crossed, thank you all once again.

    Hello Strong Ppl,

Today is my first day off the Mirt & I am already feeling horrible.

I have tapered it over 3 1/2 months dropping from 30-22-15-7.5-4-2 then off. I was on 30mg for 6 months.

I have been feeling bad withdrawal effects ever since I dropped to 7.5mg (25 days ago).

Reading your post helps, yet the mind keeps calculating how you feel and overwhelms you with fear.

    Hi Dubai

I understand how you feel as I am on day 8 now of withdrawal and 'horrible' is the only way to describe how I feel too. I stopped from 15 mg after taking it for 5 weeks so was not expecting withdrawal to be so bad. I'm finding that some days have not been as bad as others. Today has been a bad day. I'm determined to keep going despite all the side effects as I really need to get my life back on track so that is keeping me focused. The Mirtazapine prevented me from doing anything which has made everything worse than it was before. I hope you can persevere. You have done so well to reduce your dose gradually. I hope the effects of the withdrawal will soon pass and that you ll feel much better soon.

VeeJay99, Thank you for your support.

Today is my second day off mirt, I woke up with major Nausea that only eased after 3 hours ( how to handle Nausea?) I also had a headache and general tiredness.

I hope to feel better as the day goes by.

    Hi VeeJay99,

I found drinking Soda Water to be a little helpful for the nausea. Getting a little gas out with a burp helped for me so maybe give it a try. Dry crackers helped also.

    Best of luck.......

Today is day 6 off mt, last night no sleep and terrible nausea all night, today head is really bad, stomach upset, shaky legs, feel like I've been kicked. Beginning to wonder if it's all worth it. Is it really this awful tablet or is it anxiety? Can't go on like this, feel like I'm losing the will to live.

    Hi Margaret,

Your physical symptoms are classic anxiety, you mentioned your doc gave you inderal and a sleeping pills?what sleeping aid is it? and it didn't help you?..your case does not sound good and you must see a specialist to fix this..your GP clearly is useless and doesn't know enough about what we are dealing with here.

if you don't mind me asking...what's your background and age? do you have a family for support?,,sorry with all the questions..'

    Hi Margaret

I read you posting ,I think you drop down your Mirtazapine mg too fast ,there for the side effect is at all time high.

I use to have the same symptoms as you ,due to me drop my MG too fast there for the body not use to it.

Juat a suggestion , you may want to reconsider take your Mirtazapine again at 7.5MG for 1 month ,than if 7.5mg is all right ,you can cut again to 3.5MG 1 month ,some time when you cut the mg there will be some side effect but will be at minimum.

Lasty you may want try drink more water as you may or may not suffer from dehydration ,anyway do try drink more water it may work for you.

Do take care and dont gave up i am sure you can overcome this evil drug.

    Best of luck....

Today is day 8 from withdrawal, has to be the worst day by far, l feel so ill, the worst headache ever, travels right around the back of my head, no tablet relieves it, the nausea a is unbearable, my stomach is in turmoil, legs like jelly and crying for no reason, please is this normal? I had no idea that things were going to be this tough. I have read that things do get better, I really need some assurance. Makes me wonder why one deserves such punishment. Please help, if I start taking it again at a lower dose surely one has to go through all this again.
