Mirtazapine withdrawal, how long does it last?

Posted , 179 users are following.

Hi, Just looking for some reassurance/support. I was on mirtazapine for about 6months. I went up to 45mg and decided to taper down as I felt they were making me worse and the weight gain was nasty. I felt fab tapering down and generally, its been better than I anticipated however, I'm approaching the 3rd week off of mirtazapine and have started to feel a bit anxious the last few days. I've read withdrawal peaks around the 3/4week mark, so I'm trying to stay positive that it will pass.

Pleased to hear you are doing so well.would like to know how long you had been on 45mg for? And how long you will have stayed on 30mg before decreasing again? I am on citalopram 40mg and was on mirtazipine 45mg for 5 years, for severe clinical depression, would have stayed on this medication (even with the weight gain) but could no longer live with unbearable nightmares.I know for sure it is not the citalopram,as been on this drug for 8 years with no problem.decided to cautiously wean down mirtazipine and hope nightmares will go,weaned from 45mg to 30mg (and stayed there three months),just to be 100% sure depression not creating back) and only suffered night sweats initially, and some nausea, but nothing too severe.nightmares still persist,so 5 days ago weaned to 15mg,night sweats (which I can cope with) but severe nausea,to such extent, bought myself tablet cutter, and now take 22.5mg (one half tablets) nausea almost gone, early days I know, will stay on this dose for at least 4 to 6 weeks, just to let my body adjust, and make sure no sign depression creeping in.also taking multivitamin and high dose omega 3 daily.concentrating on eating really well and healthily, and swimming and aquafit 3 times week, and walking at least 30 mins daily.well done on weight loss and concentrating on diet and exercise, and please keep posting as its good to hear success stories too, keep well, and very best of luck.

I was on the 45 for 5 weeks but have been on Remeron for 4 years. I was suffering night terrors every night as well while on the medication. I plan to stay on the 30 mg for 2 weeks and then taper down to 15. If I can't handle being at 15, I will do 22.5. I'm planning on being on each taper dose for 2 weeks. It is a process, but the reward of being able to have a clear mind and lose all this terrible weight will be so rewarding. It sounds like you're on the right track here but be sure to drink plenty of water since the sweating can really dehydrate you. I promise you'll feel like a whole new person when this is over! Stay strong and best of luck! If you need me, I'm here.

      Hi

how you doing on your journey of coming off mirtazipine? Last night was my 14th night of 22.5mg (originally on 45mg for 5 years) had tapered to 30mg for 3 months. Now suffering headaches, feels like a really tight band around my head (comletetly unresponsive to painkillers) and also dizziness at times, just taking one day at a time, with the knowledge that eventually it will subside.hoping you are doing well.

Hi Chrisy, I was tapered off them in 1 week, I've now been Mirt free for 8 days, I've had headaches and a couple of sleepless nights but apart from that, I'm doing good. I was on them for a little over 3 months which is why I think I'm not having more serious withdrawal symptoms. If u need to chat just message me xx

Just curious how your weaning off mirtazapine is going, Kristi. I see it’s been 5 mos since this last post and very interested on how you’re doing now?

Hi Melanie. Last you posted was you were at 15mg  and tapered off that in one week. Your last post was you were 8d off mirtz.  This is 4 mos later so  wondering how everything went. Did you have any further side effects?

I know you were only on mirtz for 3 mos.

H i I was on Mirtazapine 15mg for just over 8 weeks and went cold turkey as I was putting on too much weight, and it stopped working so my GP said stop it. He said to take  2 temazepam and 2 by 2 mg valium  and gradually cut it down to 1 temaze. I have done this for 10 days  and my sleep was ok but I am having all sorts of queer effects. Am waking at night more, just on 1 temaze, feel exhausted,  puffing and panting on exercise,  headachy, depressed despite being on 20mg  lexapro  as well. Does anyone know how long it takes to feel ok again? Thanks.

I was on 45 mg for almost a year. Decided to start tapering off of them, because I don't want to spend the rest of my life relying on meds to control my emotions. I went down to 30 mg for a month, then 15 mg for a month, and just went down to 7.5 mg 2 weeks ago. I can honestly say that I have had the WORST withdrawal symptoms now, jumping down to 7.5 mg. I keep waking up in the night, I constantly have heart palpitations, I am more anxious and I get horrible headaches and nausea. Especially when I drink; my tolerance is so low now and even after a glass or two of wine I feel really drunk. Not to mention the hangovers ... they literally last for DAYS. I have to keep taking Advil to help my headache. I feel drunk the entire next day after drinking, my head is pounding and I feel so nauseous that I vomit. Best piece of advice - taper down your dosage gradually, and DONT drink while coming off of these meds.
