Mirtazapine withdrawl after only one half dose!! how long will it last?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hi i have been reading all these thrads on here about mirtazapine and its withdrawl symptoms and it really is a nightmare drug.

I literally only took a half dose last weekend (7.5mg) and within one hour I had a headache, dry mouth and worst of all i had really bad aches in my joints that pretty much prevented me from walking, every time i tried to bend over to get something i felt like i was going to fall over. i also experienced dizzy spells like motion sickness without the nausea. This was last Saturday, sunday was just as bad.. all day in bed (after these side effects i was determined i would not touch this medicine again), on monday thankfully the pains in my joints subsided a bit and i was able to walk again with relative ease but the motion sickness/dizziness started to get worse, since tuesday the motion sickness dizziness (feels like i'm going to lose my balance) has gotten worse and stayed the same.

I have no idea if these are withdrawl symptoms? i literally only took one dose of 7.5mg and that's it nothing else! i spoke to my gp various chemists and manufacturers of the drug and they all tell me that it should be out of my system now and they don't know what the issue is and that withdrawl symptoms shouldn' occur because i only took a small half dose!

but reading the threads on here i'm seeing lot of you have similar symptoms but to a much greater degree.

How long do these withdrawl symptoms last for?? I would never have taken this poison drug had i known all these effects would occur. literally as i write this i feel as if everything is swaying slightly, loss of balance. since yesterday i've developed some mild muscle twitching.

they just said i was hyper sensitive to this drug hence why i have these side effects adn that the half life is realtively long 40-65 hours noted, im a young male 33 so i shouldn't be having these issues.

I have't found a thread where anyone has come off mirt and no longer feels any withdrawl symptoms. has anyone been off mirt and managed to eliminate all withdrawl symptoms or is this going to affect us for years to come?

I agree with Kathy, Pete, She's probly right have a word with your Pharmasist .

Failing that if you really get worried about how you feel try 111 they are quite helpful with problems over the phone.   Take care

yeah i did they said i have to get motion sickness or dizziness medication from my gp which unfortunately is not open till tuesday sad it's not that bad i guess i can cope it's just annoying.

i should also mention i have slight muscle twitching since yesterday and day before, feels like my body is shaking randomly. i should have got some medication for the diziness on tuesday when i saw my gp, he told me to wait to the weekend to see if ti's better before starting something.. i should have just got the prescription and not used it till now. such hassle getting a prescription when it's holiday period.

i wish someone could tell me how long this effects will last it's getting very annoying i had big plans this easter but i feel i'll be bed ridden if im not better by tomorrow.

Pete, where do you live? Almost every pharmacy sells over the counter motion sickness medicine. It does NOT require a prescription. Here in the states, we have dramamine and meclazine. You should be able to get one or the other. You do NOT need a doctor to get these meds.

i already spoke to a pharmacist yesterday they said i have to get dizziness medication on prescription from my GP.

it's the shaking of muscles and loss of balance which is bothering me, it hasn't changed since tuesday when i reported it to my GP. i have no idea why i am suffering these effects.. they sound like the withdrawl effects everyone is having on here but kathy and yourself are saying it probably isn't.. i'm just so confused what on earth i am suffering from.. it's ben 4 days now since the dizziness became pronounced and hasn't improved at all.

Pete, I have never heard of a pharmacy that doesn't sell over the counter dizzy meds, in the form of meclazine or dramamine or any number of other meds that address dizzyness. They are usually used for motion sickness, but many people suffering like you have had great success using these meds. Please check your pharmacy, NOT your pharmacist for these meds.

kathy i had a look at some meds for dizzines and motion sickness but they all work by treating the nausea asociated with it not the actual dizziness/vertigo.. i would say i have vertigo more than dizziness as in it feels like things are moving up and down or spinning slightly which keeps me off balance. also add to that the muscle twitching im getting in my arms randomly. i have no idea what these symptoms are i hope it isn't something more serious like a brain tumour or something gone wrong.

i have to put it down to the mirtazapine given it all started from that. i just assume i am highly sensitive to it and may be developing what appear to be withdrawl symptoms as crazy as it sounds.. isnt one of the withdrawl symptoms dizziness and vertigo and muscle twitching?

what else could it be.. i mean if i was allergic i would be throwing up it just gave me the regular side effects of dry mouth and aches in my joints and now it's no longer in my system or a fractional amount it seems like my brain isn't functioning properly.. doesn't it affect some receptors in the brain someone said like creates a surplus and then if you stop there's a deficit? maybe that's what's causing the vertigo as my brain needs to rebalance the chemicals itself naturally but that can take up to 2 weeks?

i don't have any  nausea just dizzy vertigo symptoms so dizzy medication wont work because they only treat the nausea associated with motion sickness. unless there is some sort of vertigo medication i do not know of that i can try im kinda stuck till i see my gp.

Pete, it does, indeed, treat dizziness. It ALSO treats nausea and/or vomiting, but it treats the dizziness, too. It certainly cannot HURT in any way, to try some.

And, yes, your brain seems to need to rebalance from the chemicals in the mirt that you seem to be so very sensitive to.

how long does it take to rebalance?

i woke up today with a nasty headache not like the one i've had ever before.. maybe this is what a migraine feels like. seems like whatever reactions im going through is going through the full motions. stil have the dizzy swayness. no improvement.

Everyone is different, Pete. I wish I could give you a timeline, but I can't. Your situation seems unique, so there is no pattern to follow.

Did you try the motion sickness meds. They DO, indeed, help dizziness.

Make sure you contact your doctor on Monday to let him know what is going on.

yes i have just used some cinnazine stugeron just now we'll see in a couple hours if it helps with the dizziness and motion.. i read it only treats nausea hopefully it helps with the dizinness and vertigo too. unfortunately it's easter monday so i will have to wait till tues before i can possibly see a gp, mine is away for a couple weeks. bad timing i guess.

seems i need medication for dizziness a couple weeks and hope by then the effects of the mirtazapine have gone. if it's a chemical rebalance that's needed i guess that just takes time and treating the dizziness is just treating the symptoms temporarily in hope it'll even out by time i finish.

I am not at all familiar with that medicine, so I don't know if it will help. The ones I mentioned help dizziness also. Wish I could help more. Try to relax and take it easy. Don't dwell on the dizziness. Rest if you must. I wish you well.

well the cinanarizine hasn't worked sad maybe because i'm not suffering from actual motion sickness but what is appearing as vertigo from imbalances in my brain..

of you who suffered dizziness from mirt are your symptoms similar to mine and how long did it take for them to go away?

Can anyone guess what i am suffering from if it's not withdrawl symptoms from mirt?

is it still possible a residue amount is still in my system after 8 days?

i just went to a walk in centre to see a gp they gave me some prochlorperazine for vertigo but it hasn't helped.

i think what i am experincing feels like vertigo but it actually isn't as it's between my brain. i thought it's possible i might have a middle inner ear infection that's causing the vertigo but it seems more likely it's the mirt and adverse reaction to it. i already saw an ENY specialist this week before the symptoms started and they would have said something i assume.

is it still possible if i am hyper sensitive to the mirt i could still be experincing these side effects after 8 days?

it was esppeically bad today it feels like i am not getting enough oxygen to the brain like whenever i cover my face with my duvet cover and have less oxygen my dizziness and vertigo get much worse and when i go outside it improves slightly. have no idea why. it's like the extra oxygen helps alleviate some of the dizziness.
