Miserable with tonsillitis

I'm so miserable. I came down with this on Thursday - very high temp and sore throat. Ive seen 2 doctors and I'm on a second course of antibiotics (Clarithromycin). The doctor I saw today gasped when she looked in my mouth -said its a very bad case of tonsillitis it's been 5 days and I'm still not feeling better. I've been taking paracetamol but each time it wears of I feel absolutely awful (temp of 39, shivers, nausea, restlessness). I am 34, and I have never felt this ill in all my life - I have also developed diarrhea and threw up a few times this morning (my worst nightmare). Please can someone reassure me that this is normal and that I will get better. I'm not sure how much more of this I can take. I've lost nearly a stone as I had a tummy bug 10 days ago and still haven't properly recovered from that. I just want to feel better. Please help me.

Hi Sarah. Really sorry to hear this. I suffered for 2/3 years with constant tonsilitus and eventually had them removed last year. At one point I had the same as you I had diarrhoea and sickness and I was in bed for about a week. I also had a rash with it too. The antibitotics will kick in soon and get rid of it. It seems to be two bugs that you've got all at once. If it doesn't go within a week go back to your GP and he will most likely put you on a strong 2-3 week course of antibitotics. Really hope this gets sorted for you. Take care.

Thank you for your reply Daviess__. Do you have any tips / remedies that might help. Just took my temp and it's back to 38.3. It just makes me feel so ill when it peaks. One hour until I can take more paracetamol.

No worries. I know it is expensive but if you go into morrisons they sell Manuka Honey +10 it is £13.99 but it is amazing. It builds up your immune system and helps kill all the bacteria in your throat! I have a spoon a day and I haven't had any throat problems since, it's brilliant and very antiseptic. Also if you don't have a lot of vitamin C in your diet I think you should get the 1000mg tablets to take 1 daily. This really helps.

Great suggestions. Hubby is going to Tesco now to see if he can find some Manuka honey. Meanwhile, my temp has come down a bit and I haven't taken the next dose of paracetamol yet. Maybe this is progress.

That's brilliant, the honey really helps. Also have a big spoon a day and also you can drop a spoon into your tea to replace sugar, it does help! Only take the painkillers when it's a must, if you feel slight progression then hold off them as long as possible and let your body do the fighting. It will eventually go, I know it feels like it never will but it does. Just drink a lot more water than you normally would and only eat plain foods! I work with children so I have had every and any bug possible! Good luck.

So, I had a much better night last night - managed to get 5 hours sleep. Woke up with my throat feeling very sore, so I waited as long as I could and then took some paracetamol. Since then I have felt really funny, a bit dizzy, lightheaded, my temp has gone down but I feel hotter than ever and I'm sweating. Im really scared that something else is wrong with me, I feel really really weird. Don't know whether to take the next dose of antibiotic this morning.

I would insist you a have a blood test. It sounds like the glandular fever that I had and keep taking that antibiotics, don't miss any!

If I'm still no better tomorrow, I'll go back to the doctor again! Could it be glandular fever if my tonsils are white though? My neck does feel very swollen. I took the antibiotic and won't skip any, but might try to lay off the paracetamol for a bit. I also have very itch ears now - I'm hoping that might also mean this thing is on its way out. I have a 16m old little boy who I've barely seen for a week, it's so horrid :-(

Oh, I do feel for you :-( ive been there so many times & just before Christmas! Yes it can be glandular fever, that really does knock you back. I had tonsilitus and glandular fever at the same time. I would definitely see your doctor soon if you don't feel better within 2 days. Get a blood test and more antibiotics. Remember try lots of vitamin C & if possible get some echinacea tablets, they are amazing!
